03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Kamal. from Harleseden, North West London.

Describe your style in three words?
My dress sense is comfy and clean.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
The best gig I’ve been to was Slowthai in Brixton. I got knocked over twice in that mosh pit.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Frank Ocean and Prince, but I’ve got a long way to go and grow to rub shoulders with those names.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve been influenced by indie and grime a lot, but I subtly adopt aspects into my own work.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
It would probably be my great-grandmother Pearl Prescod. She was by all accounts a very talented, intelligent woman, who had an admirable passion for change.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
Village Underground. The energy was tangible and there’s something about the brick walls and high ceiling that create a sense of grandeur.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
King Krule. I think he both had and has the potential to reach millions more with his music, and some of his projects are genius.

Kamal. recently released his new track 'Better'. Listen, purchase or stream it via kamalnw.lnk.to/better.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Torn' by Natalie Imbruglia. I had it on my mum's iPod shuffle.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Sh’Dia' by Bon Iver. There’s something nostalgic about it.

One record you would keep forever?
'Absolutely' by Dijon. A modern classic.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“I give up, I’m going to live if it kills me”

From 'Bygones' by Keaton Henson.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'AINT THIS !' by Lancey Foux.

A song you wished you had written?
'How To Disappear Completely' by Radiohead.

Best song to turn up loud?
'CR' by Nines.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Don’t Be Sad' by Brad Mehldau.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Ghost Town' by Kanye West.

Any new artists you are listening to right now?
Something in the lake, Gglum, Jim Legxacy, Iris Holmes.
