03Interview

Name, where are you from?
TAWINGS (Yurika, Kanagawa. Cony Plankton, Tokyo. Eliy, Tokyo/Nagano.)

What do you do?
C: Musician
E: Musician
Y: Office-lady and drum.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
C: Radiohead at Green Stage FUJI ROCK 2012 and Hot Chip solo show at BLITZ AKASAKA in 2019.
E: New Order at Studio Coast Shinkiba in 2016. It is one of the artists that I feel glad to have seen in my life. Shopping at Resident in LA, 2018.
Y: The Wedding Present at SXSW 2018.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
E: KIRCHHERR in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka. A memorial place where we’ve met Jerry Paper and his band in 2017. Since then, we've been supporting a lot of overseas acts which then got me to think about playing overseas. I feel my world has expanded a lot since then. England one day, with the band.

If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
E: House party with girl bands just like us, The Slits or Elastica, and we’ll enjoy music together. It’d be super cool to get real close to them before heading home (laughs).

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
C: Freddie Mercury is the reason why I’ve got into music so… Let me go to his most chill studio or even his house to spend time, with his partner Jim Hutton and their cats altogether.
E: I’d bring flowers to Kate Bush’s house to hang out when the summer is over and the temperature feels cooler. Enjoy afternoon tea together and hear a lot about Kate’s story.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
C: I don’t think they are actually that unsung though, my heroes are The Fall. It’s a miracle that only that band could accomplish. Ideal punk they are.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
E: 'Hey Jude' by The Beatles. I was in the choir in primary school and I recall we sang to it. A strict teacher though, but knew a lot about rock and was the one who drew me into UK music.

A song that defines the teenage you?
C: Cliché but 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen. I got my parents to write the lyrics with Japanese letters so that I can sing along so I believe I’ve been singing this since at age of 11. I realized that I liked something different from the rest of the class.

One record you would keep forever?
E: If I have to choose right now, it’d be Ex:Re’s self-titled album, solo recordings by Elena Tonra from the band Daughter. I often play this album before sleep so I’m sure I would be calm and feeling comfortable even if I was alone in a remote island with this.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
C: 'Downtown Rockers' by Tom Tom Club.

Best song to turn up loud?
Y: 'All You Need Is Love' by The Beatles.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Y: 'The World Is Mine' by Samm Henshaw.

New bands you are listening to now?
E: Vegyn.
