FUR

Musicians — Brighton

Name, where are you from?
We are Fur, a Brighton based band.

Describe your style in three words?
Withnail and I-core.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Neutral Milk Hotel at the Roundhouse in Camden, 2014. I genuinely never thought I’d get to see that band perform live. Seeing grown men reduced to hysterical tears over surreal songs about Anne Frank was truly something. I reckon it was as close as I’d say I’ll ever get to having a ‘religious experience’.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Pavement for sure, we are all massive fans and would just love to soak in the vibe of being in the 90’s centric environment. The Strokes back in the early days. Not that we don’t appreciate them now just would love to be in the presence of a pure energy that everyone knew was going to blow up.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Have a love for Mod culture. Quadrophenia was a major turning point in my young life. My Dad put me on to Ska culture very early since he grew up in Coventry around the whole Jerry Dammers and The Specials scene.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
David Lynch, got a lot to ask him about the newest series of Twin Peaks, not that he’d answer them. Being in a room with who I deem possibly the greatest artistic mind of our time would be incredible, an hour wouldn’t be long enough.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Loved playing at Electric Ballroom in Camden with Rolling Black Outs Coastal Fever. I’d spent so much of my life seeing great shows there like Cap’n Jazz and Cloud Nothings. Always held it highly so was great to step out on to that stage.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
John Cale. Even though he is so highly regarded for his work in Velvet Underground I feel as though he and his solo output is overlooked. All his solo stuff is beautiful and so well crafted and he’s still at it.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Hey Mama' by Kanye West.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Still Life' by The Horrors.

One record you would keep forever?
'Boxer' by The National.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Just because you're better than me /
Doesn't mean I'm lazy /
Just because you're going forwards /
Doesn't mean I'm going backwards/
At twenty one you're on top of the scrapheap /
At sixteen you were top of the class /
All they taught you at school /
Was how to be a good worker /
The system has failed you, don't fail yourself."

'To Have And To Have Not' by Billy Bragg.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'More & More' by DJ Hixxy.

A song you wished you had written?
'A Perfect Miracle' by Spiritualized.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Arcarsenal' by At the Drive-in.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'White Flag' by Dido.

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'That’s Us/Wild Combination' by Arthur Russell.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Unhealthy' by Bakar.
'Fashion' by Jimothy Lacoste.
'Lonely Orbit' by First Hate.
'Philosophers Calling' by Crack Cloud.
