Name, where are you from?
Annabel. Born in Newport, grew up in Bristol and for the past ten years, I have been living between Cornwall and Copenhagen.

Describe your style in three words?
Old meets new.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
IDLES at the Leopalooza 2018, not only did I find out that my first schooltime drummer is in the band, but I was blown away with all of them as performers. I felt really connected with the band and it was such an empowering experience.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
The Smiths and Patti Smith - we could be a one big Smith family.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
The Cornish rave culture, and the Danish DIY scene. The mix of freedom in the fields and rave music inspires me to create dance music. The raw, Danish element has definitely taught me how to be more sincere with the stuff I’m creating. Also, it has taught me how to get the most out of the tools I have.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
John Keats, so that he could help me out with my dissertation.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Not really a venue, but it is The Cottage Party in Falmouth. It’s a small one-day festival which takes place next to the sea. It always sells out and the atmosphere is really magical.

Your greatest hero or heroine in music?
Elizabeth Fraser - I couldn’t find my voice until I heard Cherry Colored Funk. It opened my mind to all weird and experimental music out there and helped me become who I am as a musician. She also taught you don’t really need to understand the words to be moved by a voice.

Annie Hockeysmith was inspired by Cornwall's cultural and geographical landscape to create dreamlike electronic music that recalls greats such as Cocteau Twins, My Bloody Valentine and fellow Cornwall native Aphex Twin.

Hockeysmith's latest EP 'Tears At My Age' is released on 25th January via Ex-Local.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
Kylie Minogue - 'Better The Devil You Know'
My grandpa bought me lots of VHS cassettes with Kylie’s music videos on them and I used to dance and sing along to them.

A song that defines the teenage you?
Madonna - 'Don't Tell Me'

One record you would keep forever?
Aphex Twin - 'Come to Daddy'
It’s got a perfect balance of ambience and grit. 'IZ US', the track.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
Iceage - 'Plowing into the Field of Love'
Beautifully written, I find it really inspiring that English is not his first language and he can be so poetic with it.

A song you wished you had written?
Tirzah - 'I’m Not Dancing'
Great tune with a great production.

Best song to turn up loud?
Kamixlo - 'Bloodless Y (Evian Christ Remix)'

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Burzum - 'Dunkelheit'
Discovered it in Copenhagen and it became one of the many influences for Tears at My Age.

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
The Field - 'Everyday'
Heard this song in a club once and I had to ask the DJ to play it until the very end.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
LMK - 'Kelela'

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Okzharp & Mathe Ribane - 'Piki Piki'
Inka Upendo - 'Limbo', I’m in a collective with Inka and some others in Cornwall.
Lanark Artefax - 'Touch Absence'
