03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Daniel Hyndman, Mush, Leeds

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Pavement: Brixton Academy. They reformed in the height of my Pavement/Malkmus obsession phase in 2010. I went with some mates from school, we were about 18. We were total stoners back then and we all got into Pavement/Jicks in a big way together, so the reformation was a huge deal. Best track was probably Grounded I think.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Patti Smith and her Band: I've seen Patti Smith a few times. Always very inspirational, optimistic and just pretty 'right on' generally. I'm not that fussed about watching interviews, but I have found watching Patti's interviews to be pretty entertaining. Very witty and charming. Amazing records, obviously. I have written speculative emails to try and support Patti Smith in the past, alas, no luck yet.

Captain Beefheart: Why not? The guys a genius.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I don't think I've ever belonged to one. I think it's less tribal than ever now, probably because everyone's heard everything at once thanks to the internet, all the genres are happening at the same time. There's a good scene in Leeds, but all the weirdos are together, mostly.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Probably some kinda cult leader. All the best stories are about cults. Would be cool to interview L Ron Hubbard, not that I endorse his work.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Brudenell Social Club. It's my local. It has the best sound/sound guys of any intimate venue I have played, and you can get a pint for £2. Enough said.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Jaki Liebezeit from Can. Best drummer ever, probably not that 'unsung' in fairness. But maybe not sung enough.

Mush are a four-piece band from Leeds who featured as part of our British New Wave 2018. They pride themselves on their unconventional approach and specialise in absurdist, angular and exhilarating lo-fi guitar pop.

Mush will release their new album '3D Routine' via Memphis Industries on 14th February 2020. You'll also be able to catch them on their EU/UK tour throughout February and April. Full details can be found at www.musicglue.com/mushband.
