Starling

Singer — London

Name
Starling

What do you do?
I'm a recording artist.

Where are you from?
Soho

Describe your style in three words?
Class meets trash - if Marilyn Monroe did the 90s.

If you could duet with another artist in music history?
David Bowie. He was brave and bold always pushing it. I love him dearly rest in peace.

You can spend an hour with anyone from history?
Carl Jung. I love psychology and a lot of his work has influenced my music. The shadow, the dream diary, etc and the basic teachings of "you are not what happened to you, you are what you choose to be".

Starling started out by singing covers of Joni Mitchell and Bill Withers but now writes her own brand of dark, brooding pop songs. Citing Patti Smith, Bat For Lashes and Fiona Apple as influences.

Watch Starling's new video for 'No Rest for the Wicked' below - taken from her upcoming EP 'The Body' due for release in Spring 2017 through Distiller Records.

First track you played on repeat?
Is this bad? 'Wannabe' by Spice Girls.

One record you would keep forever?
'Cry To Me' by Solomon Burke.

Song that defines the teenage you?
Don't ask. Some track from Will Young his Friday's Child first album. I was a terribly s*** teenager as you can see. Plus I wanted him to be my boyfriend so dressed as a tomboy.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I wanna turn you inside out and lick you like a crisp packet."
Alt J. What can I say.

Best Gig you have ever been to?
Last month I went to this secret gig of 'Birdy' she played her new album and although I was already a fan by the end of the show I was like wow, she's the next Carol King.

A song you wished you had written?
'Use Me' by Bill Withers.

Four new songs you can’t stop playing now?

'Friends' by Francis and The Lights

'Alaska' by Maggie Rogers

'Tilted' by Christine and The Queens

'Fade' by Kanye west

P.S. Obsessed with the new Nick Cave album "One More Time With Feeling" and if you can get to see the film about it I recommend. It's hard but beautiful.
