A call to arms against the malaise of the country and the disease of X Factor, introducing The Universal.

The seeds for The Universal were sown a long time ago by Terry Shaughnessy, the front man and songwriter behind it all, having grown up completely surrounded by music; uncles who played in bands, a Mother who was a member of the Small Faces Fan Club in her teens and an avid fan of Otis Redding and all things Stax and other family members who were, and still are, avid vinyl record collectors.

Everything from The Beatles to Neil Young to Little Feat to Jackson Browne to Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis filled up hours and days and nights. Always writing from an early age, whether it be poems, short stories or just plain old commentary, Shaughnessy decided to take the next logical step and write songs in earnest, taking them out on the road in the beginning with just his voice and an acoustic guitar as backing. Learning his trade and even up until this day, being amazed by the craft of songwriting.

A common denominator throughout everything was his deep rooted love of Mod culture - The ethics, the clothes, and of course, the music, The Universal are heavily influenced by Small Faces, The Kinks, The Who, The Beatles, Stax and Motown music, Booker T and the MG’s, The Funk Brothers and then later, The Jam, Shaughnessy tips his hat to those pioneers and move makers, whilst still crafting his own original spin on things, bringing it right up to date in the 21st Century.

With the addition of Piet Koehorst on Lead Guitar, Chris Waring on Bass and David James Gaskell on drums, The Universal was formed. Gigging extensively, believing this to be the ultimate testing ground for musicians and their songs, they’ve already had the honour to play with the late, great legends Ian McLagan and Joe Strummer.

Other shows have included sharing the stage with Ocean Colour Scene, Trio Valore, Steve Cradock, The Chords, The View, The Proclaimers, Secret Affair and legends that are The Zombies. They have played anywhere and everywhere in the UK including the famous 100 Club in London, The Cavern in Liverpool and have also worked with producers Winston Rollins and the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and also with Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas.

The Universal are set to headline their first major festival this year, the Malaga Music Festival. It takes place on May 29/30th just outside Marbella in a place called La Cala de Mijas. Other bands confirmed are I Am Kloot, Steve Cradock, Trio Valore, Stone Foundation to name but a few.
