"I didn’t think it would ever be possible to capture the unique atmosphere and character of the club over its 75 years. But this book has managed to. Ditto and Fred Perry have done something very special. And I’m immensely proud of it. I’m also made up for my dad. He’s 83 now and owned the club from 1964 to 2001 and I don't think he thought something like this would ever be made about the club.
For me personally, it completely vindicates, for the first time ever, the path I chose to walk down in September 1984, aged 23.” - Jeff Horton, The 100 Club
In celebration of the legendary 100 Club, a London venue with as much character as the bands booked to play there, Fred Perry and Ditto are releasing a book of anecdotal stories from its 75-year history. From the musicians who played there through to the bar staff and the customers they served, each unique story adds to the legend and myth of this celebrated club.
The 100 Club, launched in 1942 as the Feldman Swing Club, was frequented by GIs during the war, and by the stars of British and global jazz and blues in the 1950s, including BB King and Muddy Waters. But it was in the 1970s when it became an iconic venue for the punk scene, hosting the 100 Club Punk Special, an event which featured the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Clash, Buzzcocks and The Damned. This event cemented punk as an idea and subculture, and in turn, spawned tribes of fans devoted to new ways of thinking.
The book features stories from everyone ranging from club goers to internationally famous musicians along with archive images, some of which have never been seen before.
The 100 Club is a very special place for Fred Perry Subculture. Since Subculture's launch gig with Paul Weller at the venue in 2005, Public Image Ltd., The Specials, The Fall, Thurston Moore, Black Grape, Graham Coxon, Saint Etienne, Squeeze, Marc Almond, Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse are among the legendary names that have performed at memorable and unique Subculture Live events. Subculture has also hosted some of the best new and emerging artists of the last 13 years at the venue, including Late Of The Pier, Michachu The Rakes, Fat White Family, Moonlandingz, Shame, HMLTD and Goat Girl.
100 Club Stories is available now. The 162-page hardback book will be limited to an edition of 1000 copies, priced at £24.99.
