Detroit proto-punk band Death, profiled in the fantastic 2013 documentary A Band Called Death, has just dropped Death III, its third album of archival recordings, via Drag City.

Death III collects material recorded in 1975/76, 1980 and 1992 and, according to Death’s publicist, “serves as a companion piece of sorts to the documentary, tracking the band's movement from spiritual young rockers to older and wiser, bruised-but-undefeated brothers, in pure musical terms.”

The album starts with a 1975 guitar improvisation credited to David Hackney, cuts to 1980’s "North Street," moves back and forth between tracks from 1975 and '76 (including two songs recorded at the legendary Groovesville in Detroit) and returns to 1980 for "Open Road," "We Are Only People" and "Free." Death III closes with three of David’s songs (two of which were recorded in 1992): the spiritual “Yes He’s Coming,” the guitar instrumental "First Snowfall in Detroit" and "We're Gonna Make It," first featured in the documentary.

Death has resumed touring with founding members Bobby and Dannis Hackney (bass and drums, respectively) and new guitarist Bobbie Duncan, who played with Bobby and Dannis in the reggae band Lambsbread.
