03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Alexei, Russia.

What do you do?
Seven Knives (vocal).

Describe your style in three words?
Raw, intellectual, punk.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
It was at the 'Capella' venue, which is closed now, unfortunately. I don't remember why I went there that day, but Summer Coma played live and it was big.

If you could put any three bands in history on a lineup?
To warm up: Otchim.
To fly high: The Chameleons.
To take the clothes off: Sorry.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Punk, Grunge, Afrofuturism.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Sigmund Freud.

Where is your favourite independent venue?
There are several at our local city: they are equally fine, but none is favourite. I’d mention virtual because of that: The KEXP, they are still the best.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Mike Doughty. Maybe Mike told too much what radiomen say and they put him on a blacklist.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'I Feel So Wrong' by Sleaford Mods. For a long time I loved listening to the whole albums on repeat. This habit came from the cassette player. But when I found this song at the end of the 'English Tapas', it caught me. I listened to it again and again, trying to find a job after graduation from the University.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Days Before You Came' by Placebo. The first sentence was the only one that I understood at the time: days were freezing, cold and empty. I remember long dirty winters, very early twilight and the weird force that leads you through the streets.

A song from your favourite album?
'Getting Down' by The Kills. It is the first great album I found for myself. This song means to me that when you have fun «oh oh oh ah» is enough to express the way the things are.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
'It's Not Too Late' by T Bone Burnett. Everyone knows this song now as the title song from the 'Mr Mercedes' series. Its lyrics are really inspiring, I can't imagine someone who would remain deaf to its uplifting sense.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Cocaine Cool - Extended, Vol. 2' by Laid Back. This tune is so simple, while the bass-line is great. When vocal starts I always think that it is the beaver who’s singing. And I immediately begin to do beaver moves.

A song you wished you had written?
'Heaven's Only Wishful' by MorMor. I like songs with many parts that sound fulfilled and complete. They always have these special crushes at the end, which I can't ignore.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Madonna Rocket' by Show Me the Body. Why play something loudly if not to give someone a word. I’d give a word to this guy.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Secret' by The Pierces. This song is about something you'd never expect, but it is true anyway.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?
'Don't Cling To Life' by The Murder Capital. I guess the anthem should be up to date first of all. The power of this song for me is that it’s the freshest.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Weigh, Hey And Up She Rises' by The Irish Rovers. The old song, the old morning problem. I’d like to participate in a situation that this song portrays.

A new song you're listening to?
'Rock 'n' Roll Star' by Sorry. I like what these guys do with melodies and guitars. I wish them the best because it's very interesting to know which way they go.
