Name, where are you from?
My name is Malaki and I come from Dublin, Ireland.

Describe your style in three words?
Expressive, urban, Irish.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Loyle Carner in 2017. It was my first time seeing a rapper live and I fell in love. The crowd were unbelievable. 'Ain’t Nothing Changed' by Loyle Carner was mad live.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Queen and Rage Against The Machine.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I get most of my influence from my surroundings around my city, most of which would be skate culture but mainly my friends and family.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’ve always wanted to party with Jimmy Hendrix.

Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I will never forget my first gig near my hometown. It really solidified in my mind who I want to be.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
King Krule has had a massive impact on my perception of music and the world around me. He showed me it’s okay to be vulnerable.

Malaki recently released his EP 'Don't Forget To Take Your Medicine'. Listen, purchase or stream it via linktr.ee/Malaki_Dublin.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Juicy' by The Notorious B.I.G.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'I Miss You' by Blink 182.

One record you would keep forever?
'6 Feet Beneath The Moon' by King Krule.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“I’m neat with no chaser, I’m all spirit”

From 'People's Faces' by Kae Tempest. I wouldn’t say there is one defining lyric that inspires me but Kae Tempest has a beautiful way with words.

A song you wished you had written?
'Take Me To Church' by Hozier.

Best song to turn up loud?
Anything from IDLES or Fontaine’s D.C.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The Only Exception' by Paramore, still gets me.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Rock With You' by Michael Jackson.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Where Is My Mind' by Pixies.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
I’m really enjoying Arlo Parks and Dominic Fike at the moment.
