A OLAibi Photo
Name where are you from?
OLAibi, Japan.
What do you do?
Artist.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I remember being a child and getting very excited watching a David Bowie video. My parents were audio enthusiasts and would listen to lots of different music, so I guess it was only natural that I would discover David Bowie growing up in that type of environment. I don’t recall whether it was a music video or not, but I remember being transfixed by the visuals.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I don't think cultures or subcultures have had an overt influence on me. For example, I wouldn’t choose to wear certain clothes because they represent a particular culture. But thinking about it after twenty or thirty years, I think I might have taken on some influences. Subcultures may well be behind the way I express myself. However, I think the influence is something more subtle, like aromas. When I was in the band OOIOO, we went on tour to London, and I remember thinking that the UK shared more similarities with Japan than countries like the US. The UK is a place that values its older buildings and puts emphasis on orthodoxy over the underground. It takes pride in continuing as things have always been. It’s not a subculture as such, but I’ve likely been influenced by the UK in some form.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Digeridoo' by Aphex Twin. I think that was the first time I’d heard folk instruments in electronic music. It was my parents who first got me into that track. I guess that style of music had been imprinted on me from a young age because we had various folk instruments around our house.
A song that defines the teenage you?
I guess something like an Elvis Costello ballad, which might surprise some people.
Best song to turn up loud?
To be honest, I don’t really sing.
