03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Subtle, minimalist, effortless.

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

Spice Girls - If U Can't Dance

My first Walkman, my first cassette, my first song on repeat and I will not apologise. Girl power!

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

Arctic Monkeys - Dancing Shoes

The first album I listened to in its entirety and on repeat. I knew the track list better than I knew my GCSE Spanish and this was reflected in my grade. Given the chance I’d do the same again. Sorry Mum.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Young Fathers - GET UP

A last minute decision to attend a gig at the legendary and now defunct Kazimer resulted my most memorable gig. 3 lads from Edinburgh performing experimental hip/hop both hypnotised and awakened myself and the crowd. I still get chills thinking about it.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Candi Staton - Young Hearts Run Free

A disco song about heartbreak and it’s pure perfection. My weapon of choice to turn any lagging social gathering into a party that would rival Studio 54.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

Childish Gambino - Algorhythm

Childish Gambino’s swan song to the world. I’m captivated by the whole album so this is just a sliver to tickle your tastebuds.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

The Knack - My Sharona

A classic emblem for '70s new wave rock. A story of unrequited love and a questionable age gap, the melodic hook draws you in and you can’t can’t say no. Regularly played while pelting down the M62.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks

Growing up just 14 miles from Derry, this teenage anthem was burned into us all. Saturday nights consisted of attending an underage Battle of the Bands you were guaranteed to see 7 bands do 7 renditions of this song and each one would lift the roof.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

CHIC - Le Freak - 2018 Remaster

“Why is disco so insanely popular in Liverpool? Nobody loves Luther Vandross of CHIC like a scally” Enough said.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

The Beatles - Hey Jude - Remastered 2015

It isn’t a big night in Liverpool if this Beatles classic isn’t being played. A sure way to signal the end of the night and to unify the crowd in a drunken sing-a-long.
