03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Ad-hoc vintage schlock.

The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?

Franz Ferdinand - Well That Was Easy

The first album I bought on CD when Somerfields was still a thing. I wore that disc out in the little player by my bed at night. The dynamic changes in this tune still get me to this day.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

of Montreal - Cato As A Pun

My mate used to send me zips of albums through Google Drive and in the first wave was this absolute gem. Kevin Barnes' vocabulary and unique sense of humour is something I still aspire to, and while I may never reach it, I can just about live with that.

A song from your most memorable gig?

LCD Soundsystem - Home

The first gig I went to after moving to Manchester, the packed railway tunnel under Piccadilly Station was the perfect setting for finally being able to see one of my all time favourite artists live. Say what you want about comebacks but the classics stay that way.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Daphni - Sizzling

Dan Snaith is just a genius when it comes to getting you moving. The choice of samples, the rhythms... It's like a call to action that I can't ignore.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

Brittany Howard - You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks - Recorded at East West Studios

Kinda cheating but one of the most powerful voices going right now taking on a Funkadelic classic is too good to ignore.

Best song to turn up loud? And why?

Death Grips - Hacker

A stalwart for testing out new sound-systems, I always look to Death Grips to blow out my speakers. MC Ride's rage just has to be done justice by pissing off the neighbours.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

The Mars Volta - Cicatriz Esp

The Mars Volta was the tipping point for my interest in music. I had never heard anything like it. The rabbit hole it opened created the context for taking playing bass seriously, starting bands, and otherwise just being desperate to make music.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

Ryuichi Sakamoto - THOUSAND KNIVES

While not anthemic in the traditional sense, the opener to Ryuichi Sakamoto's debut is epic. The groove, the musicianship, the unbridled creativity. This is the ultimate display of the versatility of Sakamoto as a musician and the synthesiser as an instrument.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

O Terno - Volta e Meia

I love ending big nights with something a bit beautiful, and this song is like the sound of the sunrise. Shintaro Sakamoto and Devendra Banhart are two heroes of mine and they come together beautifully with O Terno here. It's gorgeous.
