A Lynda Dawn Photo
Name, where are you from?
Lynda Dawn, North West London/Nigeria.
Describe your style in three words?
Retro, chic, timeless.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I've been fortunate enough to see some great shows, like Maestro Ennio Morricone at the O2. 'Metta Una Sera A Cena' has to be one of my favourite compositions ever written. I also saw Prince in Camden Town when he was doing those secret pop-up shows. I paid something like ten quid for an impromptu, intimate gig with Prince taking song requests from the audience. Definitely, an experience to share with the future grandchildren.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
That's a tough one. To be on a lineup with Patrice Rushen and Flora Purim (with Airto on percussion of course), would be pretty amazing. They both inspire me greatly.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I’ve been influenced by many different subcultures. From psychedelia to spiritual jazz, to Latin funk, boogie, new jack swing and more...
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Would be cool to have a cup of tea with Leon Thomas. I’d love to pick his brain and learn more about how he was able to tap into his ancestral yodelling abilities.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
I recently played The Royal Albert Hall alongside a full orchestra. I also really enjoyed playing at Crystal Palace Bowl earlier this Summer for one of its first shows since reopening. With its legacy of having artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley previously grace the stage, it was an honour to play there.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
The great, Al Dobson Jr. My favourite producer and my favourite person.
You can catch Lynda Dawn performing at The Lexington, London on Thursday 18th November 2021. Tickets are available here.

The first track you played on repeat?
'Yellow Fever' by Fela Kuti.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Players' by Slum Village.
One record you would keep forever?
'Sounds From The Village, Vol. 1' by Al Dobson Jr.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Do we deserve this universal prize, this gift to us just for being? Dare to dream.."
From 'Dare To Dream' by Viola Wills.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Music' by One Way (ft. Al Hudson).
A song you wished you had written?
I admire many songwriters and composers but I don’t wish I’d written anyone else's work.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Burning Flame' by EnLIGHTment.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Well, people who know me know I'm quite eclectic. Recently I've been listening to Mark & Suzann Farmer's 1978 record, 'We've Been There'... I really enjoy their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s 'Dreams'.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
Can't go wrong with the classic, 'Love X Love' by George Benson. In my opinion, it’s a perfect song from start to finish.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Canto A Eleggua' by Sexto Sentido.
