03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Zach Rockman, Melbourne, Australia.

What do you do?
Oil painting mostly and soon to dabble in music.

Describe your style in three words?
Glam, causal, dapper.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to in Australia?
Fibre Optixxx at Hugs and Kisses.

Which Australian subcultures have influenced you?
I hate to say it but probably the St Kilda post-punk scene in the '80s. Definitely not the music from it but more so the visual art i.e. Howard Arkley.

Best Australian musician?
Personal fave would be X.

Where is your favourite independent venue in Australia?
Waiting for something new to pop-up. Covid has been unkind to Melbourne. However, out of that, I feel something beautiful will arise.

What is Australia’s best-kept secret?
Melbourne’s southside, it's underrated at this point in time.

Best place to hang out in Australia?
Melbourne in any season other than winter.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Sure Shot' by Beastie Boys.

A song that defines the teenage you?
I’m talking about my late teens but probably 'Motorhead' by Motorhead off the self-titled album 'Motorhead'.

One record you would keep forever?
'Miami' by The Gun Club.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
“I prayed to Elvis on my knees
To take this thing from around me
Or snap it with a thundercrack
And change my blues to black”

Written by Jeffrey Lee Pierce (my hero of heroes) on 'Walking With The Beast' by The Gun Club.

A song you wished you had written?
Either 'Woodstock' by Joni Mitchell or 'Kinky Afro' by Happy Mondays. The latter is so sleazy and perfect.

Best song to turn up loud?
'Cowgirl' by Underworld.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Toxic' by Britney. It's timeless really.

A song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'White Horse' by Laid Back.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
'West End Girls' by Pet Shop Boys.

Any new bands you’re into at the moment?
Yves Tumor.
