The world has lost one of its greatest true modernists. In news that has swept the world, sadly confirmed by touching messages from his Son Duncan Jones, David Bowie has died, aged 69, following an 18 month battle with cancer.
An artist who gave new meaning to the term 'Rock Star', Bowie embraced the avant-garde, constantly reinventing his style, artistic persona and musical output. Many felt that his latest album '★' (Blackstar) heralded a new era of greatness from an artist who had already managed to exert a huge influence upon the world and the direction of popular culture in the 20th, and 21st Century.
In a heartfelt tribute from one of Bowie's long-time collaborators, Tony Visconti stated:
"He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work or Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry."
