Name, where are you from?
My name is Jarrod Mahon, I perform under the moniker ‘Emerson Snowe’. I am currently based in Brisbane, Australia.
Describe your style in three words?
Romantic Freak Pop
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Patti Smith performing Horses in full, I had become obsessed with her that year and learned everything about her - it turned out that she was touring Australia that year and it lined up perfectly.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Sufjan Stevens and Dev Hynes. Both are influential keys to my creativity, also they’re both able to constantly change and evolve.
Which Subcultures have influenced?
Club kids in 1980s New York
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Nick Cave, I find his way of not being embarrassed by his youth inspiring. Whatever happened - happened for a reason.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
One of my first shows was at a venue in Sydney (Aus) called Golden Age. It’s a tiny cinema and the backdrop is just a wall of mirrors. It’s totally small.
Your greatest hero or heroine in music?
I’m constantly changing and moving forward, but a huge inspiration of recent months has been learning about Lou Reed and French artists like Lizzy Mercier Descloux.
Emerson Snowe’s charming yet unconventional approach to music has already attracted the attention of many of his idols, including Ariel Pink, Courtney Barnett and King Krule – all of whom he has supported. July sees his first London headline show headline show, performing with a full band for the first time. Fans might also recognise him as one of the founding members of much-loved Brisbane band, The Creases.
The first track you played on repeat?
'One Million Kisses' - Half Japanese
This is seriously just one of the greatest songs written, Ernest and simple.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Everyone’s A V.I.P to Someone' - The Go! Team
Not sure why I picked this as I only heard it after school - but it feels right.
One record you would keep forever?
Bored Nothing - Some Songs
A collection of songs by a friend of mine, If you haven’t listened to the music of Fergus Miller, check him out.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'All The Same' - Deerhunter
You should take your handicaps, channel them and feed them back Till they become your strengths, hollowed out it's all the same.
A song you wished you had written?
'Chicago' - Sufjan Stevens
I would fall asleep most nights in year 11 and 12 listening to this album on repeat. It opened me up to a lot of possibilities in writing music. I also love the idea of not worrying about how to play something live when in the studio recording.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Sheila' - Atlas Sound OR 'Rebel Rebel' - Bowie
Bradford Cox is a big inspiration, and I will never tire of this song - but also Rebel Rebel is a great song for any moment.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
I could either say 'Sorry You’re Not A Winner' - Enter Shikari, or I could say 'Moon River' - Andy Williams.
Both are great tracks in their own right - depending what you think I’m into.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Ray Of Light' - Madonna.
It’s good.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Somethings Last A Long Time' - Daniel Johnston.
A lot of nights I find myself up till the sun comes through the windows - sometimes alone but mostly with friends. It gets to a point where you have to decide whether to push through or call it quits. If this song comes on- it’s most likely going to be calling it quits and attempting the sleep to come.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Not sure about new bands, other than Sorry.
But a new album I’m into is SCREAMO by Sean Nicholas Savage.
