Name?
Nick Corbin.

Where are you from?
East London via East Sussex!

What do you do?
Singer and Songwriter in New Street Adventure.

Describe your style in three words?
Occasional sharp dresser.

If you could make a record with anyone from history?
Bobby Womack is a hero of mine. It would have been great to have been around when he was making The Poet album because it was such an unexpected success. 'If You Think You’re Lonely Now' epitomises the Bobby Womack songwriting style for me and I love the story of how he got the idea for the name of the song - overhearing his mate on the phone to his missus!

What’s the best show you’ve ever been to?
Richard Hawley at The Roundhouse because although I’d heard a couple of his records before I wasn’t expecting to be so blown away. My favourite track on the night was 'I Still Want You', which contains the beautiful lyric “We can move our bodies like a twist of smoke”.

What British music icons inspire your sound today?
Ian Dury. He wasn’t a singer, but his lyrics were pure genius and he surrounded himself with amazing musicians. 'Wake Up and Make Love With Me' has to be one of the greatest ever opening tracks on an album.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Curtis Mayfield. I’ve just finished 'Travelling Soul', the biography his son, Todd, wrote. I was brought up listening to The Impressions and Curtis, more than anyone, made me realise that socially-conscious lyrics were the way forward. He used to take his kids to the studio with him whilst he was working on new records, imagine how much you’d learn if you’d tagged along!

Which British subculture means the most to you?
The Northern Soul scene because it started my musical journey with the band. It’s also how I met my girlfriend and a lot of my best mates.

If you could share the bill with any British band in history?
'Do I Wanna Know' by Arctic Monkeys is a modern masterpiece. Although we’re different in terms of musical style, I’d be confident their fans would connect with our lyrics.

What music did you listen to growing up?
A lot of soul! We always drove to France or Germany for our summer holidays and there was a lot of Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. My favourite of his was 'Knocks Me Off My Feet'.

New Street Adventure are a London-based quartet signed to Acid Jazz Records. They play a unique blend of groove-laden indie-soul. Their second album 'Stubborn Sons' was released in March 2017.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Midnight Train To Georgia' by Gladys Knight. We saw her in Croydon when I was 8 or 9 and I kept asking my Dad to play the record after that!

One record you would keep forever?
'All Because Of You' by Leroy Hutson.

A song from your favourite album?
'Facts Of Life/He’ll Be There When The Sun Goes Down' by Bobby Womack.

A song you wish you had written?
'Inner City Blues' by Marvin Gaye.

A song that defines the teenage you?
'She's Electric' by Oasis.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
'Awaken, My Love' by Childish Gambino.

A song lyric that inspires you?
"If I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it being close to you"

From 'So Far Away' by Carole King.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
'Dopamine' by Franc Moody. It’s electronic but definitely has a soulful/disco quality to it.

The best love song of all time?
'Love Is A Losing Game' by Amy Winehouse.

The best song to turn up loud?
'Are You Man Enough' by The Four Tops.

The best song to bring people together?
'See You When I Git There' by Lou Rawls.

4 songs you can’t stop listening to right now?

'In Your Eyes' by BadBadNotGood
The featured vocalist, Charlotte Day Wilson gives this song a really haunting quality. The production is brilliant and the intro sounds a lot like 'The Next Episode' by Dr. Dre!

'Operation Margarine' by Man & The Echo
One of the best lyricists around at the moment. Great social observation and British wit!

'Make A Change' by Durand Jones & The Indications
A wonderful bit of modern New York soul. Love the guitar riff present throughout the track.

'We the People' by A Tribe Called Quest
One of the most ballsy and in your face protest songs you’re likely to hear, it’s inspirational.
