The Austin, Texas-based instrumental outfit Balmorhea, founded by Rob Lowe and Michael Muller in 2006, released their fifth LP, Stranger, on 2 October via Western Vinyl. The six-piece group, described by the New Yorker as "slow burning, wordless, and ambient Americana," is currently on a national tour, which kicked off with a hometown record release show at the Mohawk.
Stranger presents an epic swirl of guitar loops, vibraphone, synthesizers, ukulele and steel drums. Standout cuts include “Days,” which bears a striking resemblance to the music of Chicago post-rock pioneers Tortoise, and “Pyrakantha,” which boasts a hypnotic down-strummed guitar intro that gives way to finger-picked acoustic folk, gurgling synth and jazzy percussion.
In addition to the aforementioned tracks, director Joe Tomcho has created an amazing video for the song “Writing Masollan.” The clip, shot on super hi-definition video, marries autumnal nature scenes to live and staged performance shots to staggering effect.
