A CIX Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name is Cix Shrimpton and I am from Doggerland, a small territory in the North Sea which was submerged by rising water levels between 6500-6200 BCE.
Describe your style in three words?
Roughly-hewn habit.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Trivium and Gojira when I was fourteen at the Manchester Apollo. I had been drinking all day and fell asleep at the back of the auditorium. Everyone kept asking me whether I was okay.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Vulcan’s Hammer, Throbbing Gristle.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
England’s Hidden Reverse. Early Norwegian black metal. Contemporary hyper-pop. The Minnesänger. Klezmer.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Hannah Arendt, because I believe her life and thought defies the expectations of politics and is incredibly difficult to categorise, requiring a certain patience and intellectual maturity to appreciate.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
I’d probably say my most treasured performances were at a friend’s property guardianship just off Old Kent Road, where I played twice and which was where I played my first ever show. I was so exceptionally nervous as I had never thought my “act” could ever be compelling or plausible on stage, but the audience seemed to find it marvellous, and it gave me confidence in my work which I had not had priorly.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I wouldn’t give any artist such primacy of the ‘greatest’ but recently I have been obsessively listening to the Medieval black metal band Grylle, on the French label Antiq, and would recommend listening to either 'France, qui te veult mal?' or 'Gothique Anjevin'.
CIX recently released her sophomore EP 'Waif'. Listen, purchase or stream it via backl.ink/146721694.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Family Portrait' by Pink.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'The Ghost Of You' by My Chemical Romance.
One record you would keep forever?
Folk Songs of Olde England by Tim Hart & Maddy Prior.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"I’on work jobs, bitch, I am a job (period)
You 'on't like it? Take a hike
Pay me for a suck and slop (bitch)
I'm a rich ass bitch with a attitude (haha)
Pipe it down 'fore I whoop you like your mama do (period)"
from 'Jobs' by City Girls.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Shut Up' by Stormzy.
A song you wished you had written?
'Get Rich or Die Trying' by 50 Cent.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Enter The Eternal Fire' by Bathory.
Best song to bring people together?
'Bite It, You Scum!' by GG Allin.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'One Britain, One Nation', a strange patriotic children’s choir piece written by Kash Singh to celebrate the union of the crowns.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'4’33"' by John Cage.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
I’m not wholly sure if the question is asking about bands that are 'new' to the music industry or 'new' to me but I’d like to talk a little about Still House Plants. They put out their first release in 2016 but they got a great deal of critical acclaim for their album 'Fast Edit' in 2020. They look so preposterously young in their band photos. Their music is minimal experimental rock, very raw and unaffected particularly in terms of the production of the vocals, and the way that the three elements (guitar, drums, vocalist) seem to be simultaneously held together while they fall apart, in a constant hesitation to allow for any musical unity, yet while always hinting at it, challenges and delights the parts of my brain that process rhythm, and gives me a feeling similar to when I first listened to Slint. I would recommend the tracks 'Do' and 'September'.
