A Deema Photo
Name, where are you from?
Deema South East London, Lewisham and Peckham.
Describe your style in three words?
Kinda (c)old still.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Toots and The Maytals at Boomtown Fair. Because there was a sea of people and the music was so good, everybody was chanting along to the songs our parents had played us.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
This one is difficult because I’d love to be on the line up with a lot of legends but I’d probably crumble next to most of them aha. But if I had to answer, just so I could watch them perform I’d probably say OutKast and Michael Jackson.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Most if not all of them! I feel like even things I dislike can still influence me to be the opposite of that. Then there’s all the good stuff that can influence me to be similar. The good stuff includes the underground grime scene, Kish’s collective and the man himself, I AM NEXT put on a lot of good events that a few of my friends performed at and I was influenced by that too. Seeing the energy at these shows was very inspiring for a young teenage Deema who shouldn’t have been allowed in the venue in the first place!
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Damn, hmmm after a bit of thought, probably a prophet or someone super zen. For now, Jesus. I heard he was relatively quite short so I’d wanna know for sure.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
My first show at Chip Shop in Brixton was actually really nice. I had to stand on a small stool to perform but I was sick, nearly fell off a few times too. I don’t know about my favourite though, maybe The Garage in Highbury and Islington. I had a really good show there opening for The Underachievers and the sound was banging and I felt like the stage was just the right size for me.
