Anthony Barlow

Where are you from?
Handsworth, Sheffield, England.

Why do you love what you do?
The process of creating things that didn’t exist before that people can relate to long after we’ve gone.

Describe your style in three words?
Charming and Melancholic (A melancholy and alcohol mixture).

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been too?
Fleet Foxes at the Eden Project in Cornwall. Perfect setting for a gig and I’m a big fan of Robin Pecknold’s writing. Villagers and The Bees supported.

What music did you listen to growing up?
I have my Dad to thank for turning me on to some decent stuff when I was a kid. He used to play things like New Order, The Beatles, David Bowie and Echo & The Bunnymen.

What British music icons inspire your sound today?
Marr/Morrisey, Garvey, Turner, Lennon, Bowie.

You can make a record with anyone from history - who would it be?
Probably Scott Walker or Gene Clark.

High Hazels new E.P. 'Weak Sun' is out now, featuring the single 'Sequin Eyes'. The band featured in our Sheffield Sound post last year, where we reported the rumours of new music from the four-piece, who count Richard Hawley and James Skelly among their fans.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
Rufus Wainwright - 'Going To A Town'
I remember listening to this on repeat when I first heard it, amazing arrangement and he has one of the best voices around in my opinion.

One record you would keep forever?
Pink Moon - Nick Drake.
'Place To Be' is my favourite song on the album.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
I got 'Boxer’ by The National on yellow vinyl. Love Bryan Devendorf’s drums and Matt Berninger’s lyrics. ‘Squalor Victoria’ is a personal favourite.

Song you wish you had written?
Joy Division - 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'

Song that defines the teenage you?
The Coral - 'Dreaming Of You'
We played this to death when we were in school and just starting to get into music. We were lucky enough to support them a few months ago.

A song lyric that inspires you?
If this town's your stinking ship, then you'll know where to jump.
Belle & Sebastian - 'The Boy Done Wrong Again'

Is there a song you like that people wouldn't expect?
Frou Frou - 'Let Go'

Four songs by new bands you can’t stop listening to right now?

Dirty Projectors - 'Keep Your Name'

Frank Ocean - 'Ivy'

Fleet Foxes - 'Third Of May / Odaigahara'

Hamilton Leithauser & Rostam - 'In A Black Out'

Been a fan of Dirty Projectors and David Longstreth’s writing for a few years, this is the standout track off the new album. I’m fairly new to Frank Ocean’s stuff but I’ve been listening to his ‘Blond’ album loads recently, it's amazing. Difficult to chose between this and ‘Seigfried’ as a favourite. So good to hear Robin Pecknold’s voice again, can't wait for the new Fleet Foxes album. We’re all big fans of the Walkmen and hope they play together again someday, but for now, frontman Hamilton Leithause’s solo stuff is filling the void nicely. Love this song he did with Rostam.
