A Kav Sandhu Photo
Name, where are you from?
Kav; Kav Blaggers or Kav Sandhu I’m from Leicester originally spent most of my 20’s living in North London now mainly based in LA.
Describe your style in three words?
Smart casual generally.
I’m into T-shirts and shirts, fitted jeans and cool jackets. Mainly black leather style jackets. I’m always wearing shades and a hat. White trainers or boots mainly I have a pretty big coat collection which I’ve collected over the years but I don’t really get a chance to wear them out here in LA, so I keep them back in the UK. I love coming back in winter and getting the coats out. Big collars are definitely a thing for me. I guess that had something to do with Eric Cantona.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Primal Scream on the 'Exterminator' tour at the Sheffield Octagon. It was absolutely incredible. Track wise I would say 'Swastika Eyes', although 'Kill All Hippies' was a monster too. That gig was a life-changing moment to be honest. I was a kid it completely blew my mind.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Neil Young and The Rolling Stones are probably two of the artists along with The Beatles and Kinks who had a huge influence on me as a kid. The fact that they’re still around and still relevant, churning out real rock n roll real music that you can feel and relate to, that’s why I would love to be on a line-up with those guys.
I bumped into Neil Young on the beach in Malibu a couple of years back. He was an absolute gent. I just love the Stones; I don’t think I’ve studied a band more than the Stones.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I would say grunge and then I was an Oasis kid, you know with the hair cut and kinda casual mod vibe. After that, I dressed a little more vintage psychedelic and sometimes a little biker rock n’ roll. But generally, I’ve always gone back to being pretty British casual, to be honest.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I would love to sit down with John Lennon.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
It would probably be Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. I played it with Happy Mondays in 2006 and 2007. 2006 on the main stage closing the festival was a highlight.
As far as clubs go, I love Razzmatazz in Barcelona, I’ve played there a few times with a few different bands.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
I would say Richard Mcnevin Duff of the Space Monkeys. He’s a brilliant songwriter and one of my favourite gigs growing up was seeing them play The Charlotte in Leicester. My band were supporting and that gig changed my life.
At one time you couldn’t go to a party after a club in Leicester without the Space Monkeys being played. They should be recognised way more than they are. But that’s how things go, fame doesn’t equal quality it’s all just bollocks really, especially now more than ever.
Kav is a frontman and the former guitarist for the Happy Mondays. His latest project, Blitz Vega, sees him team up with former bassist for The Smiths, Andy Rourke.
Blitz Vega released their debut track 'Hey Christo' in April 2019 and follow up track 'Lost & Found' in September 2019. Listen to both below.
The first track you played on repeat?
I think it was 'Everywhere' by Fleetwood Mac closely followed by 'There She Goes' by The La’s or 'Sabotage' by The Beastie Boys. Or maybe 'Live & Let Die' Guns N’ Roses! I’m not sure, to be honest.
I always play songs on repeat still to this day.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Supersonic' by Oasis.
One record you would keep forever?
'Exile On Main Street' by The Stones.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'The Only One I Know' by The Charlatans. I used to love doing the Carlton from The Fresh Prince dance, to 'I Want You Back' by the Jackson Five.
But I don’t really like dancing.
I prefer standing there with a guitar or just nodding my head propped up against the bar.
A song you wished you had written?
'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd breaks my heart every time I listen to it. I usually play it on repeat in the car, singing it out loud.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Sabotage' by The Beastie Boys.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Livin' On A Prayer' by Bon Jovi.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'I Am The Resurrection' by The Stone Roses.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
I listen to a lot of new artists, so the list is long. Because I DJ a lot and sometimes book gigs for venues, I wouldn’t want to mention anyone because I’ll probably forget to mention someone and end up upsetting them. So I’m bailing on that one. I overthink that kinda stuff.
I love music! I’m always looking for that sound that will just blow me away. Old or new it doesn’t matter.
