A Kudu Blue Photo
Name, where are you from?
Ey up, we’re Kudu Blue and we’re from Brighton!
Describe your style in three words?
Electronic / Nostalgic / eclectic.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
For me, Moses Sumney at Royal Festival Hall. Just blew the roof off. 5-minute standing ovation. What a guy.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Massive Attack and Portishead. They’re legends of the business and it’s a very coherent line up!
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I think '90s garage has had a big impact on our style and approach to production.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I’d love to spend an hour with Leonard Cohen, just for his poetry and his wisdom. I think I could learn a lot in that hour.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Not the most impressive one, but Concorde 2 is close to home, as spent so much time there growing up. Also, we played one of our favourite gigs there supporting Hiatus Kaiyote.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Bobbie Johnson is one of the best underground MC’s going.
Following the release of their EP KBVOL.4 last year, Brighton collective Kudu Blue are back with a brand-new track 'Skin Tight'.
The first track you played on repeat?
'At The River' by Groove Armada. I remember just hearing that trombone line and being instantly hooked as a kid.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Idioteque' by Radiohead. This track got me into electronic music. It was a gateway drug.
One record you would keep forever?
'Pieces Of A Man' by Gil Scott Heron. This track just hits all the feels. Sparse production and Gil’s voice up front and heartbreaking. Beauty.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Just as time knew to move on since the beginning, and the seasons know exactly when to change. Just as kindness knows no shame, know through all your joy and pain, that I'll be loving you always."
From 'As' by Stevie Wonder. Let’s give it to Stevie and his ode to devotion.
A song you wished you had written?
'Roads' by Portishead. To me this song is perfection. So simple, such lovely crunchy drums and beautiful ethereal vocals. What a track.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Sizzling' by Daphni. This track pumps so hard. Bound to get the crowd moving.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Pure Shores' by All Saints. It slaps. It just slaps.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Zombie' by Fela Kuti. Can’t beat afrobeat to get you moving.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Dawn Chorus' by Thom Yorke. Perfect pink skies music.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'Something so Sweet' by Cousin Kula. Cousin Kula are ripping it at the moment. Their debut album is beaut.
