Henry Mancini - The Pink Panther Theme - From the Mirisch-G & E Production "The Pink Panther"

My dad used to play lots of soundtracks when driving and this stuck in my mind along with Piero Piccioni. However, I remember being obsessed with Spice Girls' Viva Forever because of the video. I used to force my mum to blast the radio on whenever it aired.

A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - Remastered

I particularly love Pet Sounds' title-track because adds a cinematic and exotica feeling to The Beach Boys' sunshine pop. No wonder it had originally been conceived as an instrumental ("Run James Run") for a James Bond film. Wilson even used Coca-Cola cans on it, I mean.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Sun Ra - Space Is The Place

Space is the Place by The Sun Ra Arkestra at Lewes Con Club in 2017. It was pretty absurd and mind-blowing at the same time to see such an institution of jazz playing in a tiny East Sussex social club.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

James Brown - Get Up Offa That Thing

Every time James' "I'm back" kicks in I know it's time to embarrass myself on the dancefloor.

A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?

Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard - Double Denim Hop

I've been listening to the new London jazz scene and to loads of British indie (Sports Team, FUR, The Orielles, Insecure Men, Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard, Bakar) and European one (Clara Luciani, Giorgio Poi, Francesco de Leo, Scudetto, The Parrots). Mattiel is also very good.

Deee-Lite - Groove Is in the Heart

Groove Is in the Heart by Deee-Lite. The use of samples is superb, especially Herbie Hancock's Bring Down the Birds from Blow-Up. Oh, and those cowbells.

A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?

Booker T. & the M.G.'s - Green Onions

Booker T. & the M.G.'s - Green Onions. I think this was one of my first 45s and one of the first songs that really got me into modern jazz. It's a song that gets you dancing, but with the hip coolness that jazzmen and early modernists had.

An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?

Dusty Springfield - Son Of A Preacher Man

I've seen this song bringing together the most diverse people. The Gaylettes recorded an amazing rocksteady cover version!

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Al Downing - I'll Be Holding On

It would suit a Northern Soul all-nighter in mid-70s Blackpool as well as a New York disco club full of shady characters in flared white suits. It's got drama, love and such a strong message.
