A Many Voices Speak Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name is Matilda Mård and I live in Stockholm, Sweden.
What do you do?
I write and perform music under the artist name Many Voices Speak.
Describe your style in three words?
Art and craft teacher.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
When I saw Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks performing at Lido in Berlin. It’s also the only time I’ve seen Stephen Malkmus live. He’s my favourite singer of all time.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Broadcast because I’m a fan since recently and Richard Hawley so that he could invite me to sing 'Coles Corner' with him.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The closest subculture that has influenced me is the indie scene. For me, it represents music that is dependent on effort and originality to survive.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
David Lynch. I sometimes watch his daily weather reports and I just really like his company.
Of all the independent venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
Servant Jazz Quarters in London. It’s small enough to feel crowded with my small audience and I love brick walls.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Acetone are probably the unsung heroes of my latest unreleased music. Their music has influenced me quite a lot I think. At least subconsciously.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Även en blomma' by Anni-Frid (from ABBA).
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Place To Be' by Nick Drake.
One record you would keep forever?
Look! It’s El Perro del Mar! by El Perro del Mar.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens”
From 'Heaven' by Talking Heads.
A song you wished you had written?
'Dark Turn of Mind' by Gillian Welch.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Black Hearted Love' by PJ Harvey, John Parish.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Moon River' by Andy Williams.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Darkness on the Edge of Town' by Bruce Springsteen.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Balcony Man' by Nick Cave, Warren Ellis.
