A Meggie Brown Photo
Name, where are you from?
Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.
Moved to Nottingham though as a kid so both places feel like where I'm from.
Describe your style in three words?
Tailored ice cream.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Ronnie Spector at the Southbank a few years back now. It's not the best I've ever been to but it's up there of special moments.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
I reckon if you put my band on a line up with Ian Dury and Missy Elliot I'd be pretty happy with that - both are my kind of freaks.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Teddy Boys meets East Midlands raves meets '60s girl groups sums up what I was given growing up, which has influenced me I guess.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Ertha kit... I love her for her outlook despite her hardships "innocence is one of the most exciting things in the world" this quote of hers stays with me to have a good time.
Or, Theodora 'Byzantine Empress' (sorry people but she needs a shout out) actress, sex worker and Empress of Rome that's whyyyyy! Wow.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Not sure yet. Not seen them all yet but loved The Dome in Brighton.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Ellie Greenwich, songwriter, it's funny because a lot of my favourite songs were written by her. Unknowingly for a long time. Her songwriting has followed me through my whole life. Go have a look yourself at the beautiful songs she wrote for beautiful artists, groups, bands. Likes of, The Ronettes, The Monkees, Beach Boys, Dusty Springfield. My my, I would have loved to have met her!
Meggie Brown's youthful talent was spotted by Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos, who befriended her and went on t produce her early songs at Edwyn Collins' studio in the highlands of Scotland. Since then she has toured with the like of Amyl land The Sniffers and Gossip. Her latest release 'Boys Boys Boys' is out now, with more new music expected to be announced in January 2020.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Anemone' by The Brian Jonestown Massacre got a lot of plays.
A song that defines the teenage you?
Bronski Beat - 'Smalltown Boy'.
Growing up a secret queer in Nottingham.
One record you would keep forever?
Violent Femmes - '1983'.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"You can't put your arms around a memory" Johnny Thunders.
A song you wished you had written?
'You Got A Friend In Me" by Randy Newman.
Best song to turn up loud?
Amyl And The Sniffers - 'Caltex Cowgirl'.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Huge Dr Dre fan... I feel offended to think it would be unexpected but whenever I've put this on in the van I've had few suggestive looks that it's unexpected.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
B52s - 'Rock Lobster'.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
David Bowie - 'Right'.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Best question yet. So so so many to name a few...
Amyl And The Sniffers, Whenyoung, Viagra Boys, Warmduscher, Porridge Radio, Alan Power, The Wants, Barry, I could go on...
