Describe your style in three words?
Work in progress
The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?
Baddiel, Skinner & Lightning Seeds - Three Lions '98
I don't remember where we were going, but I distinctly remember being in my parent's car, with this in my tape player playing constantly. I had no idea who Nobby Stiles or Booby Moore were either, but to a 6-year-old me they were icons anyway.
A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?
The Beach Boys - I'm Waiting For The Day - Remastered
Pet Sounds became my favourite album pretty unconsciously. I'd been given this four-disc greatest hits of The Beach Boys which i ended up playing pretty much constantly. It's one of the most underrated songs on an undoubtedly definitive album.
A song from your most memorable gig?
Oasis - Cigarettes & Alcohol - Remastered
I was 17 when i saw Oasis in Cardiff, and I distinctly remember being topless, screaming along to this song arm-in-arm with some random bloke. I always say that that was the one gig which will probably stay with me for the rest of my life.
A song that always gets you up and dancing?
Oliver Cheatham - Get Down Saturday Night
I forgot about this song for about ten years, then recently a friend put it on at a house party, and it was like rediscovering a missing part of my life I didn't even realise was gone. The bass line is just incomparable in its simplicity.
A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?
Scalping - Chamber
Scalping are one of the most encompassing and immersive live bands I've had the pleasure of seeing, and this song symbolises the essence of what they're trying to achieve. The first time i saw them live, they blew HMLTD off the stage, and I've been hooked ever since.
Best song to turn up loud? And why?
Talking Heads - This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - 2005 Remastered Version
I remember finding a video of David Byrne and St Vincent performing this song live, and being completely transfixed by it. Just the energy of the crowd, David Byrne's moves and the way the group as a whole performed filled me with joy.
A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?
Bloc Party - Positive Tension
There are so many options here, but Silent Alarm is one of the few records from my very informative teenage years that has stood the test of time. I still feel utterly invigorated to belt out "so fucking useless" with Kele Okereke without fail.
An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?
David Bowie - Young Americans - 2016 Remastered Version
You can't help but turn it up loud and sing along. The gospel voices are entrancing and the way Bowie sings is so exuberant. It's so funky for him, it's a song I can listen to and just let go of everything.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends
It's the sort of song which, if i was walking home at 6am and the sun was rising, i would listen to, contemplating life and thinking about how fucking great the night was. it's a deeply melancholic and very lonely song, but in a way it's mine.
