Name, where are you from?
I was born in Wigan, but moved to Wolverhampton at the age of 2, so I’d be more inclined to say I’m from Wolves.
Describe your style in three words?
Vibrant, Expressive and Intuitive.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
J Cole: Born Sinner Tour. Thanks to my mate Bilal, I got to meet all of the Dreamville crew, help sell shirts, get a free ticket into the show and in some strange turn of events, saw Tim Westwood on the dancefloor.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Earth, Wind & Fire. Because… the groove. P!ATD if they did a Pretty Odd tour, but I’d wanna be there doing really bad backing vocals for them.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
I’d say I’ve been influenced by a variety of subcultures. When I was younger, I had a massive goth phase (but didn’t we all?). I took a massive influence from new age hip hop (Kendrick, Cole, Mac Miller) which sort of gave me the courage to write on the beats I was already producing.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
I feel like this answer could change on any given day. In this current moment today, I would love to spend an hour with my Nanny. I never got to meet her and I’ve heard the most amazing things about her from everybody that has ever met her.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
Band On The Wall, because it was the first time Karis – my younger sister and frequent collaborator - and I got our own green room. It really solidified the whole ‘being in the green room backstage before a gig’ feeling you dream of in the early stages before you start to get bookings.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Mr Scruff. In and beyond music, the man has an incredible thirst for knowledge and information. He’s not one to shy away from spreading the new findings and vast amounts already stored in his ever-growing vault. I’ve now had the pleasure of collaborating on music with Mr Scruff and can say that in the space of 16 working hours, he taught me a lot about how to approach sound stylistically.
The first track you played on repeat?
Children’s Favourite TV Themes - 'Fetch the Vet - Coming to the Rescue'. My sister got this CD when she was really young, and I just remember banging out this tune on my Mom’s CD player. But because it's not on Spotify, I'd have to go with The 'Shut Up' by Black Eyed Peas.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Girls, Girls, Girls' by Jay Z. I’ll leave that up to the imagination.
One record you would keep forever?
'On & On' by Erykah Badu.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
“I didn’t play the hand I was dealt, I changed my cards.”
From 'Last Call' by Kanye West.
A song you wished you had written?
'Sacrifices' by Dreamville ft EARTHGANG, J. Cole, Smino & Saba. I wish I had both written and produced this absolute BOP!
Best song to turn up loud?
'Glowed Up' by Kaytranada ft Anderson Paak.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Big City Dreams' by 'NeverShoutNever'.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
'Murder On The Dancefloor' by Sophie Ellis-Bextor.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'It Runs Through Me' by Tom Misch & De La Soul. This is another one that could vary on any given day.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
'Misery Business' by Paramore. I go through stages of having the same five songs on repeat for about two or three months at a time. Right now I’m not on anything new. I’ve heard a few songs I’ve liked the sound of, but not really enough to note it down. I really find comfort in listening to music that makes me feel a feeling I’ve already felt. Probably too deep for a simple question, but to put it simply, I’m not listening to anything new at the minute. But I will forever be grateful for Paramore.
