A Zac Lawrence Photo
Name, where are you from?
Zac – Brixton via North East Yorkshire
Describe your style in three words?
Nothing too snazzy.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Massive Attack at the O2 in 2019. I remember coming away from it completely baffled by what I’d just seen. They covered every song that had been sampled in 'Mezzanine' and the whole show was paired up with Adam Curtis compiled footage.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Talking Heads and The Fall. An assured night of rhythmical mayhem.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
The post-punk coming out of England from the late '70s onwards has probably had the most impact on my artistic and creative tendencies. I think it’s the regular juxtaposition of sweetness and grubbiness that struck a chord with me.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history, who would you choose?
James Joyce.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Windmill in Brixton will always be a sacred place to me.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Shane MacGowan. I think it’s fairly easy for his talent to be overlooked because The Pogues’ music is fairly specific in its tendencies and you really have to embrace it to get it.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Avenues And Alleyways' by Tony Christie.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'God’s Cop' by Happy Mondays.
One record you would keep forever?
'Songs Of Love And Hate' by Leonard Cohen
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"He's chameleon, comedian, Corinthian and caricature"
From 'The Bewlay Brothers' by David Bowie.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'You Can’t Be Funky' by Bush Tetras.
Best song to turn up loud?
'I Shall Be Released' by The Band.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'The Day Before You Came' by ABBA.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'The Wish' by Bruce Springsteen.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Lean Closer' by Bishopskin.
'Talk Over Town' by Katy J Pearson.
'Sparrow' by Big Thief.
