A Meirin (ZOMBIE-CHANG) Photo
Name, where are you from?
Meirin (ZOMBIE-CHANG), Tokyo.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I’ve not seen many gigs, to be honest, and choosing the best is hard… I should mention the live footage of Chaos UK’s ‘No Security’. A friend told me about them. They are at the top of Oi! punk. I used to get some power watching them getting the crowd amped!
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Punk. I loved it, especially at secondary school. Mentally, I’ve always been a rebel, I would rather do the opposite of what I get told. I don’t quite know whether that came from punks influence on me or if it's just my own personality, which attracted me to punk (laughs).
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
WALL&WALL in Aoyama, Tokyo. It’s got clear sound and is not too spacious, it feels nice and intimate. Although I’m very much into club music currently, I used to like bands a lot and it just reminds me of smaller gig venues.
If you could be on the line up with any bands in history?
The Toy Dolls. I produce my own tracks so let’s mix their crazy trademark sound and sprinkle some pop into it… That’d be interesting because I’m currently experimenting with merging band sounds with club music or electro to make a cool track. ZOMBIE-CHANG feat. The Toy Dolls…that’d be pretty rad you know!
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
The person who writes the songs for Solid Space. I think it’s Maf Vosburgjust want to fiddle synthesizers with him.
The first track you played on repeat?
'If You Wanna' by The Vaccines. I thought there would be a surprise run-in while I was in London once but what a bummer. I have a hard time remembering faces though, including band members, so how would I have even been able to tell? (laughs).
A song that defines the teenage you?
I don’t even remember my teens and it is often hard to differentiate the nationalities… Okay, 'Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing' by Discharge from the UK. It was a passionate recommendation by a friend of mine actually. I like the album cover and the title just got me to listen. Three wise monkeys, yea?
One record you would keep forever?
'Dig That Groove Baby' by The Toy Dolls. I’ve got it on vinyl and I love the cute cover art. There are different types of sounds and tracks on this one so I could keep playing the whole album without ever having had enough of it.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
'Owaranai Uta (An Endless Song)' by The Blue Hearts. It could be considered as a protest of sorts, but it’s amazing how they use simple words to translate well into the audience.
Best song to turn up loud?
'I Love It (feat. Charli XCX)' by Icona Pop.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Wouldn’t expect? I always come up with random suggestions so I’m not sure if this is going to fit within your expectations but 'Don’t Ring Me Up' by Protex.
Any new music you are listening to now?
Throbbing Gristle. I was curious about the song played in the film 'Le Choc Du Futur' and looked it up and found that it was called 'United'. The experimental electronic sound is interesting.
