25th Anniversary Reissue of 'Jollification'

Ian Broudie and The Lightning Seeds in 2019

The Summer of 2019 sees the anniversaries of many big musical releases from 1969 and 1979, both eras rich with post-psychedelic and post-punk potential respectively. Less lauded, but perhaps equally influential in its own way, it is also the anniversary of The Lightning Seeds' 'Jollification', an album that turned pop on its head and bridged the gap between 1980s pop sensibilities and 1990s indie-pop/rock.

Released by the Liverpool band in 1994, 'Jollification' has come to be regarded as one of the finest albums of the decade and featured contributions from Alison Moyet and Terry Hall among its exhibition standard pop songcraft.

Terry Hall, a longtime friend and collaborator of Broudie had also co-written three songs on the previous Lightning Seeds album 'Sense' and providing backing vocals. On 'Jollification' The Specials' icon penned the hit single 'Lucky You' with Ian Broudie.

The perfect pop album in many ways, 'Jollification' was packed with songs that somehow transcended the divided genres that were gripping the attention of UK music consumers at the time. The so-called invasion of grunge from America, the then-recent Madchester scene, the ascending Britpop movement and UK house all had their partisan supporters, but by sitting outside of all the tribal factions Lightning Seeds managed to attract its own crowd while borrowing from the others too.

Songs such as 'Perfect' and 'Marvellous' had a positivity that hadn't been seen in guitar bands for a long time, and while some couldn't allow their cynicism to be put to one side, for many it was a welcome change. Alison Moyet co-wrote and sang on album track 'My Best Day', another song and title brimming over with optimism. Though some people perhaps missed the point and dismissed Lightning Seeds as being too pop it was difficult not to sing along.

As well as Terry Hall, other contributors on the album include Alison Moyet, Ian McNabb (Icicle Works) and Simon Fowler (Ocean Colour Scene). Alison Moyet co-wrote and sang on album track 'My Best Day', another song and title brimming over with optimism. It's little wonder that the songs on the album enjoyed a life of their own as the soundtracks to countless adverts and film and TV scenes, aside from the 900,000 copies that the album has sold since its release.

To celebrate Jollification's quarter-century the album will be reissued in September by Sony Music. The record will be remastered from the original analogue master tapes and will be released on heavyweight black vinyl and a limited edition strawberry red, strawberry-scented coloured vinyl to complement Mark Farrow's famously colourful album artwork.

"I’m thrilled that Jollification is being reissued on vinyl to celebrate its 25th anniversary," says Broudie. "It evokes some great memories of that time for me. It’s brilliant to have the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with two very special nights at two iconic venues".

To coincide with the re-release Lightning Seeds will be performing Jollification in its entirety and, a set of other hits, at the London Palladium on November 7th and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on November 27th.
