03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Alistair Waterfield, Wellingborough in Northamptonshire.

What do you do?
I’m studying Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and I work for George Cox footwear as Creative Director.

Describe your style in three words?
Untethered, Eclectic, Subversive.

Which music defines the teenage you?
Teenage me was all about rock and punk, The Smiths, Bowie, Sex Pistols, The Clash; my dad wouldn’t give me much other choice, which looking back I’m pretty happy about.

A British icon who has inspired you, and why?
Thom Yorke has been a big inspiration, his songwriting for Radiohead and his solo work has stuck with me since the first time I listened.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
My favourite gig was seeing Fat White Family in Hackney. I got busted up a bit with my mate, there’s a great photo somewhere of him in a headlock between Lias’ legs.

What is your favourite independent venue to watch live music?
Probably the Moth Club, although I’m not there as much anymore. I like to shop around normally in East for music, but Jazz Cafe has had some great nights on too, I’m only a regular at my local pub nowadays.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
It would have been ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’ by The Smiths, I used to steal my sister’s portable CD player so I could listen on my own in the car while my parents played Radio Northampton.

A song you wish you’d written?
Anything by Radiohead, maybe ‘Nude’?

A song from your favourite album?
It’s too hard to name a favourite album but listen to ‘Paper Trails’ from 'Psychic' by Darkside.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
Quite a while back I got a hold of ‘Singularity’ by Jon Hopkins and it's really good.

Best song to bring people together?
‘Let’s Dance’ by David Bowie has never failed to fill a dance floor anywhere I go.

Best song to end an all-nighter?
‘Shame Shame Shame’ by Shirley & Company is a great tune to head home to.

The best love song of all time?
Tempted to put ‘Creep’ but I’m going to go with ‘Five String Serenade’ by Mazzy Star.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
I have a really broad music taste, but will always have a soft spot for Disco, in particular, Italo-Disco, so as a taster, let’s say ‘Ma Quale Idea’ by Pino D'Angiò.

What new music are you listening to?
Lots of DJs and labels currently like Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Habibi Funk etc.
