03Interview

Name, where are you from?
We are Beach Beach, four Majorcan guys based in Barcelona.

What do you do?
We write and play sparkly power pop.

Describe your style in three words:
Arreglaíto pero informal.

A British icon or band who inspire your sound?
Scotts stole our hearts years ago, and Orange Juice 'Falling And Laughing' will always be a reference. The Jam 'London Traffic' and Prefab Sprout 'Faron' are cool as well.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
'The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death' by The Housemartins.

Most meaningful lyrics to inspire change?
'Stop' by Mega City Four.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
03/02/2007 Sala Apolo (Barcelona), the (one night only) return of the post-hardcore/emo local classics Aina, in a benefit gig to raise money for Jay Robbins from Jawbox’s son.
22/05/2008 My Bloody Valentine (Madrid) they played Benicàssim the night before, and that was their first time ever in Spain, but the gig in Madrid was in a more reduced and comfortable spot. I still remember the volume blasting against my whole body, in the front row.

Beach Beach are a four-piece indie band, originating from Mallorca and based in Barcelona, leading the current Spanish indie scene.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
Antònia Font - 'Viure Sense Tu'
The lyrics of this album (and this song’s lyrics especially) could be seen in most of the early 2000’s Majorcan teenagers’ MSN Messenger status.

Which music defines the teenage you?
Probably a mix of music that our older brothers and cousins used to listen to: Spanish indie classics Los Planetas 'Qué Puedo Hacer', Swedish melodic hardcore bands like Satanic Surfers '…And The Cheese Fell Down', hard rock milestones like Led Zeppelin 'Kashmir' and some Catalan pop band like Els Pets 'Una Estona De Cel'.

A song from your favourite album?
The Go-Betweens - 'Was There Anything I Could Do?'
A timeless A+ pop gem from a timeless A+ pop album.

A song you wish you’d written?
Teenage Fanclub - 'Hang On'
Or how to start with a heavy metal riff and end with a lovely folky flute outro.

Best love song of all time?
Probably not the best but a recurrent pair are 'Listen To Her Heart' by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and 'Bachelor Kisses' by The Go-Betweens.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
Radio friendly soft-rock is always a vault of surprises. 'Give A Little Bit' by Supertramp is definitely worth a chance.

Best song to bring people together?
Two Saturdays ago, the DJ played 'Got My Mind Set On You' by George Harrison at the pub and everyone went crazy.

What new music/bands are you listening to?
We like Hoops’ new album 'Routines' a lot. The songs 'Rules' and 'The Way Luv Is' are gorgeous.
