Describe your style in three words?
'50s, '80s, '90s.
The first track you played on repeat? And where did you play it?
Elton John - I'm Still Standing
I got this on 7" single - a freebie from Clarks when my mum bought me a new pair of school shoes, in 1983. There was a choice of 3 singles at the till, sadly, I can't remember what the others were but I picked Elton John because he was my mum's favourite artist at the time.
A song from your favourite album? And what does this track mean to you?
Dexys Midnight Runners - Thankfully Not Living in Yorkshire It Doesn't Apply - 2000 Remaster
My favourite albums change a lot. As I get older, I delve deeper into the '80s. This whole album is inspired by Northern Soul, it has some big hits on there like 'Geno' & 'Seven Days Too Long' but this is my favourite track with its driving baseline, catchy chorus & great lyrics.
A song from your most memorable gig?
Teenage Fanclub - Sparky's Dream - Remastered
In 1996, I went Feile festival in Dublin. We got there late but caught most of the bands but no Teenage Fanclub? Had we missed them? The Foo Fighters finished, everyone started to leave. Unexpectedly, TF appeared, apologised for being late & broke into 'Sparky's Dream'.
A song that always gets you up and dancing?
Alex Harvey - Midnight Moses
This was the last record played at my wedding! This track gets me up on the dance floor because it's packed with energy right from the get-go!
A new song you're listening to? Why do you like this artist?
Fontaines D.C. - Boys In the Better Land
I'm not great at keeping up with new music. As I get older, I find myself listening more & more to songs from my youth but recently, Fontaines D.C. have really caught my ear. To me, they sound like Sonic Youth, if Sonic Youth were from Dublin.
Best song to turn up loud? And why?
The White Stripes - The Hardest Button to Button
I've been a fan of The White Stripes for years and this is my 'walk to work' , 'blow away the cobwebs', 'get ready for the day' track.
A song that defines the teenage you? And the memories it evokes?
Nirvana - In Bloom - Nevermind Version
I was 14 when 'Nevermind' was released and everything about Nirvana struck a chord with my teenage, angst-fuelled self. This song was me, hanging out with my pals, sitting on a park bench, listening to music on our Walkmans & thinking we were sliced bread.
An anthemic song? Why does it get your pulse racing?
Elvis Presley - If I Can Dream - Live
By 1968 many people thought Elvis was washed-up & just did silly movies. This performance proved the cynics wrong & introduced us to 'Suspicious Minds', 'A Little Less Conversation' & my favourite, 'If I Can Dream'.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
Gary U.S. Bonds - Quarter to Three
All nighters shouldn't end. Just keep dancing.
