A Gardna Photo
Name, where are you from?
My name's Gardna, and I’m from Bristol, UK.
Describe your style in three words?
Big. Bad. Heavy.
What’s the best gig you've ever been to?
There has been so many! Best one this year was The Streets at Boomtown 2019 – he was daring the crowd to climb up on top of the stage and into the waterfall for Lauryn Hills headline slot, in the end, he just did it himself and still nailed his 16 bar. LEGEND.
If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
I regularly share the line up with these brothers and long may it continue. My two favourite live acts in our field, GDC and Kiko never fail to blow my mind.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Last year I released a 'Rudeboy' so... Yeah, I’ve always admired the music, style and fashion. My sound takes heavy influence from sound system music. I guess I found my niche by putting a UK twist on this style of music. I’m mostly talking about what it’s like to be growing, living and going out in my city in my lyrics, so I guess that parallels the culture a bit.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Would have to be Goldie, I’ve read the book. imagine the stories.
Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
I just did my album launch party in the newly renovated Thekla, in Bristol. Hands down, best gig of my life, one for the history books.
Your greatest unsung hero in music?
Kreed. This guy is a wizard and when his long-awaited EP drops he’s gonna be huge – watch this space. Also feeling Lord Echo at the moment, none of my mates would know him. Sick though.
Gardna will release his debut album 'Good Time Not A Long Time' on the 18th October 2019. The record sees him team up with some reggae/dub stars like Hollie Cook, Kiko Bun and Eva Lazarus to name just a few. You can pre-order it at backl.ink/GoodTimeNotaLongTime.
Gardna is currently out on a world tour, for details and dates visit www.musicglue.com/gardnauk/listings.
The first track you played on repeat?
I can remember buying the Kelis - 'Millionaire' CD single from HMV as a kid. Google tells me this track is now 15 years old. Ouch.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Eastern Jam' by Chase and Status.
One record you would keep forever?
'The Master Has Come Back' by Damian Marley.
I’ve absolutely rinsed this album. Flow is impeccable.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Anything can happen and it probably will."
- Stamina MC
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Circles' by Adam F is an absolute classic.
A song you wished you had written?
'Lite Weight' by Anderson .Paak.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Back to Bassiks' (Floating Points Remix) by Headie One ft. Skepta.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Panic Room' by AU/RA & Camelphat.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)' by Peggy Gou.
Any new music you are listening to right now?
'Just Know' by JD Reid, Henry Wu.
'Armageddon' by The Skints.
'Rockets' by LION BABE ft. Moe Moks
'Pine & Ginger' by Amindi.
'Light As A Feather' by Mungo’s HiFi x Eva Lazarus.
