03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Haich Ber Na, PE7.

Describe your style in three words?
Free, Functional and ever-changing.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Probably Chronixx at Brixton Academy... very spiritual.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Pretty Ricky or Hot Chip because they're both amazing.

Which Subcultures have influenced you?
Grime was a big part of life growing up. It was the first time black and mixed British kids really had their own "thing".

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Kanye. I'm sure he'd teach me something I'd understand 20 years later.

Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
I saw Mala at a small but cool spot in Lisbon called 'Music Box'.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
C4. Such an underrated MC, was doing something different from day.

Influenced by dancehall, soul and indie-pop, fused with UK dance and psychedelic sounds, Haich Ber Na is coming to be defined by his distinctive avant-garde electronica. The self-taught musician has journeyed far from his origins in hip-hop and grime, now working alongside fellow underground artists, MTMBO, Alxndr London and Elheist.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
Craig David - 'Rewind'.
I used to sit by my parents' CD player and just reload this for hours.

A song that defines the teenage you?
Soulja Boy - 'I Got Me Some Bapes'.
I bought a few pairs of fake Bapes off eBay after watching the music video for this. Protect Soulja Boy at all costs.

One record you would keep forever?
Kanye West - 'Late Registration'.
My pops used to play this album in the car, Ye's discography is amazing but this one for me is his best work.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
It's hard to think of a lyric to be honest. Trilla once said "Wagwan fam... mana Jamaican like yam" that one touched me.

A song you wished you had written?
Tame Impala - 'Eventually'.
The way he sings so soft over such heavy guitars is insane.

Best song to turn up loud?
Gandalf - 'Hang On To A Dream'.
The louder this is on you realise how much of an anthem it is.

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Lil Keish - 'Come F*ck Me'.
Big tune.

The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Really depends on what night you're at. But probably Lil Keisha - 'Come F*ck Me' (Again).

Best song to end an all-nighter?
Dntel - 'To A Fault'.
Something to come down to but also get you in your feelings.

Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Bunny Hoova have a really cool album out. Discovered them a few months ago and have been hooked since.
