Name, where are you from?
Hetty Douglas, from Nottingham.

What do you do?
I'm a painter.

Describe your style in three words:
Not womens wear.

How did you find yourself in London if you’re from Nottingham?
I’ve been here maybe 7 years? I came here to study when I was 18. I was going to do a foundation and take my time with it. I thought f*** it, I’ll apply to a London uni and see if I get in and I did get in, so I went.

What are the main themes of your work?
Reflecting on thoughts and feelings. Situations I’ve experienced both negative and positive. More recently I’ve been thinking about how certain thoughts and feelings develop that have come from where I’m from and how that changes things.

Would you say you challenge conventional ways artists work?
I don’t try and challenge anything, I just do what I do. Maybe my work’s an exaggerated version of my own personality? I think that comes out when I feel nervous or anxious about something. If I’m in social situations and I feel nervous about things, maybe I become a more exaggerated version of myself and that can be reflected in my work. I feel like I’m doing something I need to do, and if people like it, that’s a bonus.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
‘Dilemma’ by Nelly and Kelly. Best song.

What music defines the teenage you?
Teenage? Probably scene/emo/rock vibe; Blink 182, Underoath, Panic! At the Disco, all the really awful, awful stuff, but then also whatever my mum was listening to like the Fugees, Nick Cave. All the good stuff.

A song from your favourite album?
'Reinventing Your Exit' from 'They're Only Chasing Safety' by Underoath.

A British icon that has inspired you?
My mum.

What was the last piece of music you bought?
A subscription to apple music, that's really bad isn’t it.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
Atreyu and 36 Crazy Fists - it was my first gig.

What was the last album you bought?
My girlfriends - Goodbye Grace.

Best love song of all time?
'So Sick' by Neyo hahaha.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
'Boyfriend' by Justin Bieber. (C'mon though it's a banger, "sitting by the fire whilst we eating fondue.")
