03Interview

Name, where are you from?
I’m Jim, I hail from East-London originally, but now reside in South where I play guitar and sing in speed country-synth quintet Honkies.

Describe your style in three words?
‘Very old clothing’ (Please do not confuse with vintage)

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Motorhead at Brixton Academy circa 2005 - it was my first proper show. The drummer ‘Mickey-Dee’ did a 45-minute drum solo.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
I would create a super-group combining the members of The Happy Mondays and Rush. I’d replace myself with Bez so I could dance onstage with maracas. Steve Albini and Kanye West would engineer and produce the project respectively.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Unfortunately ‘New Rave’ once played a bigger part in my life than was strictly necessary.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
George Jones or Waylon Jennings. George Jones drove a lawnmower 8 miles at 5mph to buy liquor after his wife hid his car keys. In the '80s Waylon Jennings had a $1500 a day cocaine habit.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
It’s gotta be Windmill Brixton. They soak up all of the talent and then let it grow.

Honkies released their debut EP 'Hold Your Horses / It's all kicking off for Honkies Volume 01!!!11!!1!' on 18th of January 2019 via Permanent Creeps Records.

You can catch the South London based outfit at one of their upcoming shows:

31.01.19 The Windmill, Brixton (w/ The Rebel & Mice on Mars)
23.02.19 Shacklewell Arms, London (w/ Holiday Ghosts)
28.03.19 The Victoria, London (w/ PreGoblin)

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
'Chocolate Salty Balls' - Chef, South Park

One record you would keep forever?
'Station to Station'
It's got everything. An absolute schooling in musicianship from Bowie and co.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
‘We were trying funny things, we were smoking funny things’
Kid Rock - 'All Summer Long'

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
Spiller - 'Groovejet'
Absolute magic from the lovely Sophie Ellis Bextor and friends.

A song you wished you had written?
Flame Proof Moth - ‘Gas’
It's clever and funny.

Best song to turn up loud?
Karenn - 'A Room Full Of F*ck All'

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
Oliver Twist Soundtrack - ‘Who Will Buy?’
Massive drop

Best song to end an all-nighter on?
Dean Martin - ‘Send Me The Pillow That You Dream On’
I like to get an early night.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
POSA - 'What About Long John?'
Peeping Drexels - 'Bills Drift'
Pink Eye Club - 'Angry Things On The Internet'
