A Max Dillon Photo
Name, where are you from?
Max Dillon, South East London.
Describe your style in three words?
Black and white.
If you could photograph a band or artist, living or dead?
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
Which Subcultures have influenced you?
The New York scene that came out of CBGB’s and Max’s in the '70s. Musicians like Patti Smith, Velvet Underground and Television but also artists like Robert Mapplethorpe.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
It may be cliché, but it would have to be John Lennon.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Nick Cave, because for a brief moment I held him aloft as he surfed the crowd, during 'Jubilee Street'. Or maybe The Last Shadow Puppets at Ally Pally because they walked out to a shower of pink confetti with Johnny Marr and Cam Avery, covering my all-time favourite Smiths song 'Last Night I Dreamt…', The Fall and closing with 'Moonage Daydream'. It’s what I imagine heaven would look and sound like.
Of all the venues you’ve been to, which is your favourite?
There’s never a bad night at The Shacklewell Arms.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Eva Cassidy, because her story is amazing, and her songs never fail to make me cry.
Max Dillon is a photographer currently working and studying in London. He has recently photographed artists including Shame, Johnny Marr, Patti Smith, Faux Real, Baxter Dury, Fat White Family and Black Country, New Road. See more of Max's work at www.instagram.com/maxdillon7
The first track you played on repeat?
I got my hands on a lot of Beatles and Bowie records at an early age, so probably 'All My Loving' by The Beatles. Or it could’ve been 'Dirty Old Town' by The Pogues.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Hero' - Frank Ocean, Mick Jones, Diplo and Paul Simonon. It’s a similar blur of genres that my teenage years were spent listening to.
One record you would keep forever?
Kanye West - 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy', partly because it’s an amazing album, but also because the art is a world of its own (it has interchangeable album covers).
A song you wished you had written?
It’s got to be 'Marquee Moon' by Television or 'People Have the Power' by Patti Smith.
Best song to turn up loud?
Depending on what mood I’m in, either 'Let The Sunshine In' by The 5th Dimension or 'The Delaney' by The Libertines.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Galang' - M.I.A.
The song to get you straight on the dance floor?
Definitely something from the '70s like 'Hot Stuff' by Donna Summer or 'Rock Your Baby' by George McCrae.
Best song to end an all-nighter?
'Like a Prayer' - Madonna.
Any new bands you are into at the moment?
Black Country, New Road ('Sunglasses')
Faux Real ('Second Sweat')
Jessica Winter ('Sleep Forever')
