Name, where are you from?
Ryan, Hull.
Describe your style in three words?
Plastic, Nauseous, Poor.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Radiohead on The Pyramid, Glastonbury, 2017. A £240 well spent. My friend also proposed to his girlfriend during Daydreaming.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Suicide and Sonic Youth.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
I guess it's a counterculture, but the Beat Generation opened me up to different writers. Naturally, becoming fascinated with the likes of Burroughs and everything they offered.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Howard Marks. I'd ask him all I need to know. Rather appropriately, I finished his Autobiography on a recent trip to Amsterdam.
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The Adelphi in Hull holds a very special place in my heart. It's a place that me and my friends grew up, and still do. As soon as you're under the mouldy roof you're immediately transported into some bohemian greenhouse, where the outsiders are welcomed with open arms.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Rowland S. Howard. An Artist, Poet, and everything in-between. I initially discovered The Birthday Party and was compelled to carry on listening when I first heard She's Hit. He had an ability to construct this harsh tone that left you feeling fatigued. He's also an incredible lyricist and has had a substantial influence on our band.
The first track you played on repeat?
'Ceremony' by New Order. My Dad has influenced me greatly in different music and films. He first introduced me to Post-Punk bands like Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen when I was 16, but I just couldn't grasp it. At 18 I was obsessed.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'Bastards of Young' by The Replacements.
One record you would keep forever?
'The Idiot' by Iggy Pop. When I hear 'Nightclubbing' I'm transported to '70s Berlin, Iggy and Bowie. I became totally obsessed with their whole Berlin-era movement a few years back and even managed to find their flat in Schoneberg. I'm pretty keen like that.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"So many feelings
Pent up in here
Left all alone, I'm with
The one I most fear
I'm sick and I'm tired
Of reasoning
Just want to break out
Shake off this skin"
'I Can't Escape Myself' by The Sound.
A song you wished you had written?
'Things We Never Did' by Sad Lovers & Giants.
Best song to turn up loud?
'She's Like Heroin To Me' by The Gun Club.
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Oh Girl' by The Chi-Lites.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Sunday' by Yuck.
