03Interview

Name, where are you from?
Robert, West Bromwich, UK.

Describe your style in three words?
Fresh, grungey, showy.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Aldous Harding at the Trinity Centre in Bristol a couple of years ago. She had everyone’s attention, she is such a mesmerising artist.

If you could be on the line up with any two artists in history?
Sonic Youth. They were a very important part of my teens and twenties especially. There has never been anyone else who could do what they did. Kanye West. I don’t have any idols but Ye is a truly inspiring character. I am a massive fan of everything after 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted fantasy' ...and that album too.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
I think one of the biggest influences was the rave scene. I’m a Techno head. You have to be a certain person to be into raving. The friendships and groups formed around the ‘things’ that happen around the scene, cement life directions. It’s definitely made me more rebellious or more eager to detach from the mainstream. I think that another subculture that had a great impact was the rap-metal or nu-metal wave of the mid to late nineties. It gave me a crossover into another genre, hip-hop.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
My Dad. Since he died over twenty years ago, I’ve built up a wealth of things to discuss with him. It would be hard to cram into an hour though.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite?
The Melkweg. It’s just cool as f*ck.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
John Parish. Producing so many great albums for artists and many people outside of the industry haven’t heard of him. He has a knack for finding the best sound from an artist.

Robert recently released his album 'Orange Is The New Black' featuring the likes of Jason Williamson, Rag'n'Bone Man and Kool Keith in Spring 2022. Stream or purchase it via t.co/nWzeorWpmt.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?

A song that defines the teenage you?
'Kimberly Austin' by Porno for Pyros.

'Hey' by Pixies.

"There’s leaders and there’s followers, but I’d rather be a dick than a swallower"

From 'New Slaves' by Kanye West.

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'The Future' by CamelPhat and Rebūke.
