A Saltwater Sun Photo
Name, where are you from?
We’re Saltwater Sun from Reading.
Describe your style in three words?
Must do better.
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Kate Bush at the Hammersmith Apollo.
Her first show in London since the 1970s. Everything was flawless; her performance, the production, the palpable awe of the audience.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Nothing gets people dancing like The Beach Boys. We saw Brian Wilson at Bestival, and it was one huge party.
And David Bowie, which needs no further explanation and we never got the chance to see him.
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Skate culture, pop punk and the nu-metal scenes shaped our identities and our friendships with each other and still hold a massive place in our hearts.
If you could spend an hour with anyone from history?
Charlie Day from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia - our favourite show.
Aside from being hilarious, he ploughed everything into following his dream, risking his own assets to make it happen and has kept complete creative control over the show with the other founding cast members/writers. It’s now one of the most successful sitcoms in history!
Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
The Mucky Duck in Brighton during The Great Escape.
It’s a proper sweatbox - both times we’ve played the festival there, we’ve had queues around the block and people standing on chairs singing along. Such an amazing atmosphere.
Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
Joanna Newsom. She’s one of the best songwriters of our generation, but her name is often missed off such lists, which is criminal.
Reading five-piece indie band, Saltwater Sun returned this Summer with 'Hot Mess' and 'The Wire' gaining praise from the like of Huw Stevens and John Kennedy.
Catch them on tour in September this year:
13 Sept - Heartbreakers, Southampton
14 Sept - Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, Brighton
20 Sept - Purple Turtle, Reading
22 Sept - EBGBs, Liverpool
27 Sept - Sebright Arms, London
The first track you played on repeat?
'Wuthering Heights' by Kate Bush on cassette. The tape was chewed to shreds.
A song that defines the teenage you?
'What’s My Age Again?' by Blink 182.
One record you would keep forever?
'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' by The Smashing Pumpkins. Track '1979'.
A song lyric that has inspired you?
"Heavens when you looked at me,
your eyes were like machinery,
your hands were making artefacts,
in the corner of my mind."
From 'Mary' by Big Thief.
The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?
'Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place)' by Talking Heads. This is one of the few songs that would get our whole friendship group dancing.
A song you wished you had written?
'Tender' by Blur. Gives us the same warm and fuzzy feeling every time we hear it.
Best song to turn up loud?
'Them Changes' by Thundercat. Air Bass at the ready!
A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?
'Dia The Flu' by Deftones. Deftones are a big influence on us that you may not necessarily hear in our music.
Best song to end an all-nighter on?
'Ceremony' by New Order. All-nighters can feel cinematic. There is a montage in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette which captures the feeling of pulling an all-nighter and watching the sunrise with your friends. This song soundtracks it: it’s perfect.
Any new bands you are listening to right now?
'Disappoint Me' by Hockey Dad. We saw them at Sticky Mikes in Brighton in the early hours in a beer-fueled haze.
'Loner Boogie' by Boy Azooga. Fond memories of watching this lot on the beach at The Great Escape 2018 in the glorious sunshine. We love how varied their album is.
'Whole Again' by Gengahr. We supported these guys in our native Reading and got to hear some of the songs from the new album before they came out. The excellent thing about Gengahr is you only need to hear a guitar part and you know it's them before you hear the rest of the song, their sound is that distinctive.
'Slippin' by The Magic Gang. We’ve been fans for a while, but they recently released their debut so we’ll class them as new. Like Weezer and The Beach Boys had a musical and baby - which is a great as it sounds.
