03Interview

Describe your style in three words?

Anything that fits.

The first track you played on repeat?

The Jam - Down In The Tube Station At Midnight - Single Version

I grew up heavily listening to bands like The Jam thanks to my Dad’s past involvement in the mod & punk scene. This particular song got played in the car plenty of times, and the countless London lyrical references are perhaps why it feels so familiar to me.

A song from your favorite album?

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog - Remaster

I can’t fault this band, and the album this song is from - 'Mothership'. Whilst their guitar riffs may be comically intricate and obnoxiously present here, their musical genius cannot be denied. They were also the inspiration for my first tattoo - Sorry mum.

A song from your most memorable gig?

Slowdive - Crazy for You

I saw Slowdive at a festival in Paris a few years ago, and had one of those classic ‘spiritual awakenings’ you sometimes get, or hear about getting when listening to certain music live.

A song that always gets you up and dancing?

Stereo MC's - Chicken Shake

I LOVE this WHOLE album, it’s perfect for when you have a bunch of mates round for the night. I could have just as easily chosen any song off this album as there’s not a single one I’d skip, but landed on this one cos I like the name and the minimal vocals.

A new song you're listening to?

Hovvdy - Out There

I love everything that Hovvdy do, and this collab is no exception. I’ve been playing this song constantly from the day I found it a few weeks ago. I think it’s so beautiful and I’ll always find time for it.

Best song to turn up loud?

Crystal Castles - Empathy

This song can ONLY be played loud. Even better if you can hear it live in concert, but full volume through headphones will do it too.

A song that defines the teenage you?

Cage The Elephant - Aberdeen

This song has enough teen angst to still be taken seriously, whilst also throwing me back to my teenage association with alternative rock. It’s another album of 12 ‘unskippable’ tracks, perfectly summing up adolescent frustrations.

An anthemic song?

The Strokes - Is This It

This song is suchlike a classic. It will never get old and screams '00s indie rock In its prime. Anyone else who knows this song as I do surely attaches the same nostalgia with it that I do too.

Best song to end an all-nighter?

Darwin Deez - Radar Detector

Possibly the most feel-good song I’ve come across - it’s impossible not to get up and dance to. I love when artists don’t take themselves too seriously and can have fun with humorous lyrics like he does.
