What is your name? Where are you from?
My name is Alonza Bevan and I live in the woods near the Belgian/French border.

What do you do?
I write songs, play bass and make records with Kula Shaker… amongst other things.

Describe your style in three words?
Transcendental psychedelic rock’n’roll.

How should your music be listened to?
Very loud.

What do you miss about home when you’re on tour?
My family, a reliable supply of tea and people who say hello when you pass them on the street.

What British music icons inspire your sound today?
Too many to mention… John, Paul, George and Ringo, Mick and Keith, Donavan, Bert Jansch, Mr Bowie, Ray Davies, Hank Marvin, Robert, Jimmy, John and John… in no particular order and we could just keep going.

Outside of Kula Shaker, Alonza Bevan was also a member of Johnny Marr's band, The Healers. November 2016 sees Kula Shaker re-release their debut album 'K', marking the 20th anniversary of its original release. ‘K’ drew on the influences that included George Harrison, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks and Deep Purple. Kula Shaker will perform 'K' in full at each date of their December 2017 UK tour, along with tracks from their other four albums. For more information go to www.kulashaker.co.uk

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
My parents 45’ of 'Twist and Shout' by The Beatles.

A song from your favourite album?
This can change from day to day, hour to hour so today at this hour (Sunday morning) it is;
'Sunday Morning' from The Velvet Underground and Nico.

Song you wish you had written?
One of the many songs I wish I had written is 'God Only Knows' by Brian Wilson/Beach Boys.

A lyric that has inspired you?
'Kick Out The Jams!' by MC5… Get ready to testify!!

Four songs from new bands you are listening to now?

Billie Holiday - Warpaint
The track isn’t that recent and the band have been around for a while but in my world they’re pretty new. I like the way they sound like a proper band who have worked up their tracks by playing instruments in a room together as opposed to staring at a computer screen.

How You Like Me Now? - The Heavy
Again not so new but newer than James Brown!

R U Mine - The Arctic Monkeys
One of the few bands in the mainstream carrying the torch for British rock and roll.

Le désert du trop tard - Olivier Terwagne
I chose this partly because I produced it but mainly because Olivier is a talented song writer who touches you even when you don’t know what he’s singing about.
