03Interview

Name, what do you do?
Penny, Tattoo Artist.

Describe your style in three words?
Love, natural, spiritual.

Which Hong Kong musicians are you into at the minute?
Bedroom Party.

Which subcultures have influenced you?
Indie film and music are the subcultures that affect me the most. I am moved by their passions, emotional expressions, and the pursuit of something intangible, which often help me to relax and relieve myself from the oppressive life.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
I lately went to the live performance by the newer Hong Kong band - Bad Math, and I enjoyed it so much. Not only you can dance with friends along with their songs, but also they are a perfect warm-up band. And what I liked most was the audience that day. They were so into their performance and were having fun. I think this is what is called "the fun of a professional performance".

What is your favourite local independent venue?
Eaton Hotel.

An icon or music band who inspire your sound?
The Japanese band Mushroom Empire (Kinokoteikoku) is most inspirational to my growth. For a while, I liked their song - 'Paranoid Parade' (パラノイドパレード). At that time, I was about to make a significant change in my career: leaving the old studio and starting my own. Regardless of whether the decision was right or wrong, it taught me a valuable lesson. The music of the Mushroom Empire often gives me the “lost in a big city” feeling of TOKYO. That is experiencing the people coming and leaving, separating and reunions, and the urge to cry whenever you want to. But at the same time, learning how to say goodbye and cherish each reunion and elevations, even if it may be good or bad. Their songs remind me of the old self when I listen.
