03Interview

Name, where are you from?

We are Grave Goods. Lois is from Manchester, Sarah from Waterford and Phil from Belfast.

Describe your style (dress sense) in three words?

Mostly black stuff.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to (and why)?

Lois - I went to see Peaches recently and it was definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. During ‘Dick in the air’ She inflated a giant translucent phallus across the crowd and climbed inside it.

If you could be on the line up with any two bands/artists in history - who would it be and why?Sarah - The Creatures - I love Siouxie and the Banshees but I've only heard of The Creatures in recent years. I was hooked at first listen. I love to use as much of the drum kit as possible and their music is so percussive with mostly drums and vocals, I'd love to experience it in real life.

Phil - The Gun Club - because I love them, and Jeffrey Lee Pierce died when I was a kid. Might be fun (crazy, even!) to hang out together backstage. I've met Kid Congo Powers before and he was a great conversationalist.

Which subcultures have influenced you (and why)?
Lois - I think Hackers are cool AF but musically Punk had a massive impact on me when I was a kid, because I could hear all the angst I was feeling in it and it lead me to a new community of people that I felt really at home with.

If you could spend an hour with anyone from history - who would it be and why?
Phil - I always wanted to meet Scott Walker before he passed away in 2019. A reclusive, hermetic person I wish I knew more about with such a broad range of releases across his career. He seemed so mysterious and interesting.

Of all the venues you’ve been to or played, which is your favourite (and why)?
Sarah - There are some folks here that are putting on DIY gigs in various underpasses beneath the M50 motorway and I got to play one recently, it was such a buzz. I went to see a gig there not long after and it was so much fun! I love playing DIY gigs and spaces. Venues without stages are my favourite, I feel less exposed and more part of the crowd. There's a different energy to that which I find makes a gig more fun and comfortable to play. The underpass is my new favourite, we need more gigs in spaces like that.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music (and why)?
Phil - I'd maybe say Dean Blunt? Can't really believe he's not better known than he is and he's consistently brilliant in my mind. I also love that he might just release an album randomly on bandcamp without any other fanfare or acknowledgement.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?

Phil - maybe Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz? It was the first single I bought too.

A song that defines the teenage you?

Lois - Pulp - Disco 2000

One record you would keep forever?

Phil - All My People by Maria Somerville, one of my all time faves made all the more special by being by someone I know.

A song lyric that has inspired you?

Phil - "everybody knows I've only got one song, and it's much too long, and it's much too slow, and this is how it goes".

The song that would get you straight on the dance floor?

Lois - Giant Swan - IFTLOYL

A song you wished you had written?

Sarah - Lower Dens - Brains

Best song to turn up loud?

Lois - Gilla Band - Shoulderblades

A song people wouldn’t expect you to like?

Lois - Abba - Voulez Vous

Best song to end an all-nighter on?

Sarah - Q Lazarus- Goodbye Horses

Lois - Soulwax - Krack

Any new bands/artists you are listening to right now?

Sarah - Katie Kim

Lois. - M(h)aol, Kyogen, Mandy, Indiana.

Phil - Yl Hooi.
