Name, where are you from?
My name is Patrick and I’m from London.

What do you do?
Musician.

Describe your style in three words?
Smart, oversized, vintage.

Which music defines the teenage you?
I used to listen to a lot of Hard Bop at school, particularly Horace Silver, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Lee Morgan. Horace Silver has a unique sound, his compositions always have great melodies and the arrangements are really original and more often than not feature a lot of my other favourite musicians.

A British icon or band who inspire your sound?
The London Symphony Orchestra, in particular their brass section with Maurice Murphy. Murphy was the reason John Williams used the LSO for his film scores (including Star Wars, Indiana Jones etc.) The LSO brass sound is a bright, vibrant sound I often seek to replicate when playing orchestral music on top of being incredible to listen to.

What has been your all-time favourite gig?
My favourite gigs have been my friend’s recitals I have seen this year. After a year of seeing no live music it had been fantastic hearing some of my best friends playing some incredible, varied music ranging from early renaissance recorder to modern, newly commissioned pieces and arrangements. Each recital I’ve seen has made me really excited to see more live music.

04Playlist Notes

What was the first song you played on repeat?
'Open Sesame' by Freddie Hubbard. It’s the first song on the first album I bought. Freddie Hubbard is still one of my trumpet idols. I love his vibrant sound and the energy which he plays with. I’m still stunned by this song every time I re-listen to it.

A song from your favourite album?
'A Flower is a Lovesome Thing' from Joe Henderson’s Lush Life is one of my favourites because it is a beautiful ballad which, paired with Henderson’s rich, muscular sound, makes an incredible recording. The album features the music of Billy Strayhorn who is well known for his collaborations with Duke Ellington.

What is the last piece of music you bought?
'Lathe of Heaven' by Mark Turner. The album features incredible improvisations and thoughtful melodies. The album has no chord playing instruments creating an opening for polyphonic interplay.

Is there a song you like that people wouldn’t expect?
I mostly listen to classical and jazz music but I’ve been listening to Caribou after lots of friends suggested his music.

What new music/bands are you listening to?
I’ve been really enjoying listening to Marquis Hill and Braxton Cook. They’re both incredibly exciting to listen to and their compositions and improvisations always have me on the edge of my seat.
