03Interview

Name
Gabriel and Daniel Levy.

Where are you from?
London.

Describe your style in three words?
D: Considered, if restless.

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
G: When I was first exposed to the style of Sprechgesang. The time and place has escaped me, but I remember being captivated instantly.

If you could spend an evening with anyone from history?
D: Bobby Fischer, immediately following the Spassky match in ’72. Not to congratulate him, but to understand what his genius was doing to him.

Of all the venues you’ve played, which is your favourite?
G: We’ve been hosted by some wonderful establishments, so it would be hard to choose a favourite. However, our personal experiences in music have landed us in some obscure scenarios, such as the pit of the Novello Theatre.

Your greatest unsung hero or heroine in music?
G: Bill Miller. Accompanying Frank Sinatra for much of his career, a wonderful pianist whose magic lies in the shadows behind a famous voice.
D: Miroslav Vitous. If only for ‘Basic Laws’.

Sistertalk take neoclassical soundscapes and hammer them into a dark and angular portrait. Imagine a bitter artist, after a sleepless three-day bender, finally putting pen to paper. They will be supporting Shame at The 100 Club as part of our SubcultureLive gigs series in January 2018 after featuring prominently in our British New Wave 2018 blog.

04Playlist Notes

The first track you played on repeat?
G: I couldn’t say for certain, however ‘Duel Of The Fates’ by John Williams was a very early obsession of mine.

A song that defines the teenage you?
D: Girls - ‘Vomit’. Not, I must add, for the title.

One record you would keep forever?
G: ‘The King and I’ soundtrack. Every composition is as elegant as the film is sumptuous.
D: The Teenage Tragedy compilation by Rhino. In the words on the cover: ‘A specially-priced collection of dream date discs with a death wish’.

A song lyric that has inspired you?
G: Of late, anything from Richard Dawson’s ‘Peasant’.

A song you wished you had written?
D: Scott Walker - ‘It’s Raining Today’.

Any new bands you are listening to right now?
G+D: The Mantis Opera.
